Help !, on the run into work this morning suffered an (apparent) loss of compression after engine cut out, the clocks reset themselves, fortunately the rear did not lock up as was going ( quite ) fast on the straight. Once over at the side of the road an attempt at restart resulted in the starter spining very fast couple with an ocasional crack/pop from the exhaust. Serious me thinks so called roadside rescue at this point and went home with tail between legs.

Any ideas anyone ? any advice welcome.

Put it in gear and turn the rear wheel very slowly. Feel for compression and any signs of "jamming" ie a valve touching a piston. If no mechanical contact felt then perform a compression test. With WOT expect 130 -150 psi after 3 or 4 revolutions.
Take it from here.

Cant figure this, finally got engine turning over again, following trials with bad/poor earths, have done a compression test on both cylinders - absolutely zero, even tested my compression tester with a foot pump to make sure it was working. Engine turns over very easily and with no 'resistance' ( tested by hand first ), you can see the pistons travelling up and down when looking through the plug holes. cant feel any air coming out through the plugs holes either, but can feel air being pushed out of the breather vents alternatively. Can the cam slip, I assume it is a gear driven set up, find this hard to believe but I am at my wits end trying to find a simple and cheap solution but nothing comes to mind. ECMSpy shows no error codes and performs all diagnostics as expected. Previously burned very little oil and put a smile on my face each and every day I rode it, it is a 2004 model with 22k miles on the clock and has been serviced regularly ( more than recommended ). Just bought a new clutch cable too ...
As before any and all comments welcome.

That's about the size of it mate.......unless you can spanner the bike yourself (and no disrespect intended but it sounds like you cant) even at mine or Tubbs labour rates, your bike is skip fodder.
Not wishing to rub salt etc. but said it many times.......XB series = Bic of the bike world :x
