Hi!

I have just bought my self a Buell XB9R Firebolt from 2003 and love the bike, but i have a little problem that i don´t know what the problem is, so I´m wondering if there is anyone that could have any suggestions on what the problem could be on my bike. Hope everybody understands what i mean with my explanation bellow since my first language isn´t english, but i will try the best i can :).

When i turn on the ignition and the bike is resting on the side stand i can´t start the bike. The starter motor runs but it does not start the engine. If i flick up the side stand you now hear that the fuel pump starts and the automatic head lamp also turns on and i can now start the bike with no problem. If i flick down the side stand again it kills the engine and turns of the head lamp to. So i can only start the engine when the side stand is up :(. Could it be the side stand switch that is malfunctioning? Has anyone else had this problem? Don´t find it as a big problem for me since i can start the bike if the side stand is up, just find it a little annoying that i can´t start the bike and warm up the engine when i put my helmet and gears on :(.

Hope anyone have any ideas on what my problem could be.
/Kim

By-pass the safety switch, and wire the connections together directly - as long as you are good about remembering to lift the stand before you ride off!

Sounds like the sidestand switch is working OK as putting stand up allows the bike to start........more likely a problem with the neutral switch and the bike thinking it's in gear ....if so pulling the clutch in will allow it to start but if you start to let clutch out with stand down it'll cut out again.
Other possibility i think is a faulty diode but Maz will confirm ;)

Hmm... maybe you are correct. There is another problem to which my local harley-davidsson center told me was maybe because i had a bad battery. If i try to start the bike (with the stand up) and don´t pull in the clutch the starter motor sounds like a screwdriver when it hits it´s maximum momentum (did i explain that correct?) you know when it clicks around like hell and sounds like a childs toy machine-gun. If i pull in the clutch the starter motor turns around nicely and makes the engine run. The guy at harley-davidsson thought that it was because of the battery that it didn´t have enough power for the starter motor to turn the engine on with the clutch not pulled in, and after a few tries it even did this when i had the clutch pulled in, so think maybe it hasn´t enough power? But maybe this could have something to do with the neutral switch to? Will buy a new battery to see if it solves that problem. Will test and try to start the bike to with the clutch pulled in and the side stand down and see what happens.

Came to think about one thing, does the neutral switch also affects the fuel pump and the head lamp? Because when the side stand is down the fuel pump wont run and the head lamp is out. When i flick up the side stand the head lamp comes to live and you hear the fuel pump turns on. When i flick down the side stand again it turns of the fuel pump again and also the head lamp. I know that the fuel pumps is turned off because if i flick up the side stand ones more i hear the sound from the fuel pump turning on again.

By the faulty diode you mean one of the fuses in the fuse box am i right?

Thanks for the help so far :).

Hmmm... if it is the neutral switch, is this something you could replace by your self? Or is it better to have my local harley center fix this for me?

Bad battery will make it sound like a machine gun ;)
Is the neutral light working on the dash? if the lights on then unlikely to be the problem.
Not sure how easy it is to change the neautral switch on an Xb depends if you can get to it behind the front pulley.........maybe somebody else can confirm that for you.
And yes the Diodes are in the fuse box ;) so very easy to change.
with the neutral light when mine stopped working it was just a bad connection where the wire connected to the switch...was just a case of cleaning and nipping up the connector with some pliers before refitting :)

Yes the neutral light is working fine on the dash. Is the neutral switch working correctly then if the neutral light is working as it should on the dash, or did i missunderstand you?

Time to go to sleep for me know, getting late here in Sweden, will sign in tomorrow again and let you know what has happened so far :)

yep if the light on the dash is working then it sounds like the neutral switch is ok........try replacing the diodes.............maybe swap them around as i think there is two not sure what fault that would give you but may help diagnose the fault. Not sure if they'll fit if you turn them wrong way round so be careful you fit them the correct way.

All Xb's have side stand switches as standard as do the X1's etc

AFAIK 02-03 XB9 have the switch installed, 04-07 XB don't have one, and all DDFI-3 XB do have it again.

kul att du hittade hit...kolla dioderna först...om Maz säger att det är så-...så brukar det vara så. Hur mår batteriet föresten....låter det som en kulspruta så kan det vara det men det låter ändå skumt att N lampan bara går på när du har i kopplingen??

Hey, Kim

Greetings, welcome etc. Just noticed your location. We've an office in Hbg, which is currently about 50m from the HD/B dealers there although we'll be moving in the new year.

I'll let you know next time I'm out that way, I'll stand you a coffee. 8-)

Tjenixen Micke!

MVH
Kim
