I'm currently considering my options , one of the front mounting holes is damaged (threaded to a larger metric thread) on my own head , considering repair , new or second hand . If any one has anything suitable that would be great.

Thanks , David

I'd be inclined to fit an undamaged head and it may be worth checking out the price of a new one.
The support around those holes can be a bit marginal, so maybe you could get it welded up and tapped out to the smaller original UNC?

Isn't a time-sert an option to save it!?

I'm sure that would work but it would involve taking even more supporting metal away and more likely to break again :?

I've tried all my local engineering places , not one even does helicoiling. From reading a timesert would work but trying to find a place to do it is my problem.

You probably have to do it yourself.
Have a look at what the costs are for a small kit ,or maybe someone here that can do the work for you! ;)

ebay do a nice range of metric or imperial helicoil kits

Timeserts are far better than helicoils in that they are a solid insert so can't uncoil like helicoils sometimes do, looking at that photo Dave has somebody sand blasted the machined surfaces ? It is always a bad idea to sandblast any machined surface,

They were soda blasted , engine was in terrible condition on the bike when I got it , every job I've gone at , some problem has turned up . Trying to make her as good as possible without breaking the bank.

I had planned to put spondon mount on but without sorting head it's a waste of time. Didn't really think of the machined surfaces on mount face :-( all the rest ok

Think I'm getting sorted , guy gonna do an insert and rethread, hope the heat and differant materials don't cause it to crack tho when put together and run.

If any one has a front thunderstorm head leave me know thanks

Why? :?

Timesert takes more of the original material away, which matters, how is a helicoil not suitable?

I would clean the hole, fill it with weld then drill at tap at the right place and angle...

After looking at picture I would helicoil the thread.
and to repair the mating face ( to give support to what it is mating against) I would use a good quality alloy metal filler . ( no heat / least amount of parent metal removal )
used one many years ago forget the name but something like mazel or mezel
Basically a two part epoxy type material but gritty nature, like sand

Since its been drilled and tapped already, do you think there will be enough material there for a helicoil? Especially when you need it in the correct position so the front mount will fit...
