Getting a bit parky in these 'ere 'ills so the heated grips are on for the first time since last winter. Problem is on the low setting they're both so so, but not really warm enough. Switch to high setting and the left gets hotter but the throttle side goes cold. I can't find a wiring diagram for the grips in the online manual. I've found out they're not heated grips as such as there are no wires to the grips. Do the bar ends have heating elements in them? How is the two stage heating achieved? I've taken the front panel off and the two plugs seem to be making good contact.

I retro fitted factory grips to my XB and it is definitely the grips that provide the heat with wires running to them. I don't recall the wiring but will dig out the box and instructions later if I get chance but sounds very like a connection problem if the grip works on low and not on high. I used the bike the past few days with temps of about 3 degrees C and the first setting cooks my hands, I have to switch it on and off when it is too warm, setting 2 is for frying steak.

You know, for the price of heated grips, you're a long way towards the cost of one of those natty little heated vests that use a Lithium battery. My mate has one and swears by it :yup:
Keep the core temperature up and you'll get warm blood to your fingers and more importantly, to your brain :yup:

I've just undone the switchgear and throttle cables and slipped the throttle side off, no wires at all going to the grip. I've taken the plastic plug out of the end of the handlebars, and peering up I can see insulation of some sort. The wires are fed up the inside of the bars from the centre, meaning the bars themselves must have the elements in them. They are switched by the standard switch, and everything looks very original and untouched, I just thought they were all like this. I'll get tracing the wires in the daylight. Thanks for the offer of a wiring diagram, I'm sure it must be wired the same.

Which makes sense for how hot the throttle gets cos it is not attached to the bar...

Yes, it does seem a bit of an inefficient layout, like trying to fry an egg by holding a candle near it. But they did work last time I had them switched on, which would be last winter. I'm sure I can't be the only one with this set up?

Not wanting to divert from your question, I have the Buell grips and I find my throttle hand is hotter than the clutch hand... Why? Maybe cos the hold the throttle more firmly, maybe cos the clutch side is heating the bar... I find the clutch hand gets hotter if a squeeze the grip more...

Maybe you (one) need(s) and internal one on the left and a grip type on the right :run:

I still haven't sussed out my problem, but I have found out what they are. May not have been factory fitted, but they use the correct plugs and switch. I'm only the second owner of this bike, and the first owner said the heated grips were on when he purchased the bike new.

They were quite popular with Buells not so long ago.

The connectors are Deutsch DTMs.

I've never come across these bar heaters before. I guess the advantage is they can be used with any grips, also the bike looks cleaner with no exposed wires. If an element is shot I guess the only place to get replacements is the US.

Worth doing a continuity test before ripping them out and replacing. Then check the feeds and earths to each grip.

BINGO!
How true, that is the route I would go
as a Raynauds sufferer (especially in winter)

Will do that today. But once they're up and running I think I'll take the advice and look into buying a battery heated vest. I do have one that plugs into the bike, but it's a real faff getting the wire through several layers of outer clothing. Then I usually forget I'm plugged in and almost pull the bike over when I get off..

Took the Deutsch plugs apart and checked resistance on both elements in each heater, 16 ohms and 21 ohms, then switched on and checked I had power on the wires for both switch settings. All fine and dandy.
What I did notice though was that one of the pins in one of the Deutsch plugs was pushed back a little and not level with the other two. Hopefully this was the problem.
Will find out next time I'm out and about
