Crank seal blown or water running down your clutch? A cable tie at the top of the rubber boot which covers the adjuster may help...

Perfectly normal for this time of year, especially on bikes that only do short runs......as Pash says, make sure the cable boot is tied top and bottom.

Good to see coppa grease on the screws though ;) a sign that it might have been looked after reasonably well.

I've not ridden it yet and have no idea what the bike's done in the last year. It has a full service history with a Harley dealer in Bristol up to 10,000 miles. I've only just noticed that Maz had it in with him 22nd of October 2011 for all sorts of work, at 10,700 miles including a 10,000 mile service. There are no bills for anything since then.

The bike has only done 2000 miles since May 2010, but I suspect that it's on the same fluids Maz put in it in Ocyober 2011.

I'm sure a change of engine, primary and gearbox oil is in order, I'll need to get it properly warmed up first though, to try and get as much of the moisture out as I can. There was about half a cup of clear water in the breather drain pipe.

I'll have some oil from you Maz when I see you about the exhaust.

Yes. Was it yours?

It travelled from farthest Cormwall to York a couple of weeks ago.

Should I now be worried...?

Thanks Pash, I'm much happier having had a few PM chats with Maz. He had told me the name of the previous owner that had the work done, and confirmed that he had done the work. I'd found one of those posts you have put links to, and I'll be seeing Maz over the Christmas holidays for a standard exhaust (for MoT time) and some service items to get the bike ready for a dry day.

Clutch operation is much better having swapped to the standard lever, and lubed pivots, mating faces and the cable. Will probably be better still with a new cable, but I think I'll try it before doing any more.

The brake master cylinder is easily swapped back if I don't like it, I've stripped and cleaned the front calliper too. Pads and disk seem in good order, they've hardly done anything since they were fitted.

Really looking forawrd to having a ride out on it, maybe this rain will wash some of the salt away!

If I can’t get out for a ride (to warm the oil) on my liquid cooled bikes before an oil change, I run them at idle until the radiator fan cuts in, at a little above 100 degs C. The oil isn’t as hot as after a ride, but it gives it a chance. I see that the Buell has an engine cooling fan behind the rear cylinder, but no temperature gauge, can I safely run the Buell at idle until the fan cuts in to ensure the engine oil is warmed through?

If not, is there a way of getting things warmed up without riding it round the agricultural roads around my house, covering it in mud and salt?

Yeah, run it at idle till hot, but that won't get much heat into the transmission oil. For that you need a long ride.

Park it against the radiator in the lounge and then use the wifes hairdryer to warm the transmission up before draining it into her best roast dish ;)
You'll find it will also reduce the central heating bill because more than the oil will get heated ;)

Thanks guys. Engine and primary oil first, to get all of that cream cheese out of the clutch and primary chain...

Went to see Maz today, thanks for your help.

I now have a healthy concern over the longevity of my XB12R, some good advice to try to keep it well for as long as possible, and some service parts to play with in the garage.

I had thought that moving from my 1992 TZR250 Vee Twin (two top end rebuilds and an engine swap) to a 2004 XB12R would ease my reliability worries, but it seems not. I've had a tour of Maz's XB trophy room, and now know that I must say a small prayer before each ride, carry all the lucky charms I can find, snap up any engine spares I see, and look after my XB just in case it's the one that lives for ever while other fall by the wayside.

Still looking forward to getting out for a ride on it, but now not so sure how far I should go from home...
