Hello Buelligans
I have been a lurking member for a few years now. I had an XB9R about 6 years ago.
Yesterday i got my dream Buell a 2001 X1 Lightning.
I live and work west London/ Surrey.
My X1 has done 23,000 miles. It runs reasonably well although previous owners have not been kind to it.
Its dirty and not too well maintained.
It runs OK on the motorway, easily gets up to over 100mph around town its very lumpy under 30mph.
Beautiful to ride though, so smooth over bumps.

I am hoping to have someone with experience look it over particularly the fuel injection set up. Are there any reliable companies that look after us in West London Surrey?
I am happy to tinker myself and do not generally trust mechanics since this bike was only serviced a few miles ago and already the plastic petrol filter has burst!

I will search the threads but does anyone have a stock X1 exhaust for sale or swap?
Mine has the V&H and it really is too loud for commuting on.

Looking forward to getting into this bike.

Alex

It should be using a steel canister type fuel filter NOT plastic ;) remember the canister is on the pressure side of the fuel pump.

My X1 is at maz's :maz: and i don't think you will find a better man to sort your Buell out than him,bit of a grumpy bugga :!: but certainly knows all there is to know about Buells and especially X1's. Long way from you but you won't regret it.

Thanks Guys, I replaced the plastic filter. the part I fitted is for a Mercedes car. (Mahle KL12) it has 8mm tube fittings.
I have opened up the V&H silencer, it is totally empty aside from the perforated centre tube. I have some packing on order, that should help silence the beast and offer some useful back pressure for tootling round town.
As the bike is new to me I have been fiddling.......
Honest all I did was oil a few things and spray wd40 on some exposed connectors, and apply silicone grease to the HT leads.
Now the thing is dead. The lights comeon with the ignition key but no sound from the fuel pump at all, no clicks whiring and pressing the starter button doesnt do a thing.
The clutch interlock has already been diabled, the side stand switch has been discounted by lifting the stand and checking its out of gear. I have wiggled and sprayed the fuse box and ecu connections seam so tight they will not even wiggle.
Anyone got any ideas whats up?
Thanks.

Kill switch. This bike has not been looked after, its stodd outdoors for around two years. I cleaned up the switchgear and all seems fine now. Ill run it next when I get the exhaust packing sometime during the week.
Thanks.

Ill keep to this thread for now, feel a bit cautious of jumping into the tech forums so early.
I have had the X1 for two weekends now. changed the oil which was very black. I realise that simply emptying the oil tank doesnt clear the oil lines, Ill do another flush in a few weeks since 20W50 seams so much cheeper than the special stuff I put in my Triumph (£8 5.5 litres against £50).
I now have a K&N intake filter in the Helmholtz box so it must be breathing easier than the oiled Buell item that was also full of road soil.
I changed the transmission oil, the old stuff smelled of gear oil, I refilled with the same 20W50 engine oil as so many seem to suggest is OK. I must say though selecting first gear feels clunkier than with the thick gear oil.
I am concerned about belt stretch or pulley wear. The adjusters only have a few mm left but the belt is slack enough that with light finger pressure the belt touches frame above and below. the swing arm. the belt looks good by all the guides, there is no sign of flaking on the pulley teeth but they are not as smooth as I would expect. I havent counted the teeth yet, maybe the belt or pullie tooth counts are wrong?
I have read that ignition switches are a common weakness, the three wires at the back of the switch are warm to the touch. while a new one is relativly cheep I like having one key for all the locks. Has anyone had much success rebuilding them?
I had an oil leak from the oil pump. I was ready for that to be a big job but once I got the AST shock off realised it was only a loose pipe, so now no more Lube for the AST, not long before it goes all rusty like the V&H silencer. I repacked that some more using ordinary glass fibre mat ( I have plenty lying about.) Intersting to see how dirty the stuff I put in last week is already. I guess that shows it isnt too tightly packed.
I also tightened up the nuts on the exhaust flanges at the headers, that hopefully will stop some of the popping in the pipes on overun. They are very rusty so thats a Job I do not want to put off too long, new studs, nuts and gaskets.

I still want to make this thing quieter! Anyone got ideas on a decent silencer? Is there a different baffle that can be stuck in the V&H?

Next thing I am convinced I need to do is a TPS with the spy lead, I have a lead on the way thanks to this forum.

I have been told about Maz, I have considered ways to get the bike to Manchester but its not so practical really. I read so many positives about him.

I am loving the bike, just need to get the sub 30MPH fueling sorted, I was stuck behind a police car in traffic during the week, at 28 MPH the great brute of a thing gets so sulky!

you need the special sportster transmission lubricant not engine oil , and belt tension is dead on

Ooo, you may have clutch slip issues with normal 20/50 in the primary, HD Formula+ is order of the day.

Four gearing options are available:
Euro 29/55
US 27/61 (this is the best)
A combination of the above

You may find you have a 27/55 or you may find you have a longer belt. I think the standard belt is 127 teeth.

Weapon of choice here is Acoustafil. Work out what size you need here, then get it (from the same place) on EBay.

The studs may break when you take them off. Use Copa-Slip on the threads to ensure the nuts don't seize. Also consider using K-Nuts which are less likely to fall off.

A TPS reset may help with the popping. Also, check your exhaust gaskets. If it still pops, we can use ECMSpy to tidy it up.

US gearing will help here...
