I'm a CAD and BIM Manager by day. I manage AutoCAD, Revit, Inventor, 3ds Max and Showcase at my current employer. I've been involved in drafting in one way or another since birth.

After work I enjoy working on the bike and my car. My car is a 1988 Mazda RX-7 GTU. I just finished, not too long ago, rebuilding the 200k mile engine. It got a large street port with some new gaskets, injectors, sensors and what-not. It's a beast.

I also like talking shop with anyone. I don't so much argue as I hold intelligent conversation. If I think I'm right, I'll debate till I'm blue in the face; however I will admit when I'm wrong, as well.

I like to innovate. When I see something that can be improved upon, I see a challenge and accept it. If I think something can be done better, I don't hesitate to speak up or do it.

Hope to chat with some like-minded individuals here!

Welcome Lee. Looks like you have a super modded Blast. Shame you are not in the UK as I bet Jill Brown would love to slobber over it...

I quite like it as well. Interesting set of modifications. One thing that struck me is why use XB9R lifters how are they different from the Blast ones (I have no knowledge of the Blast engine at all)?

I am sure you and Pash will get on very well him being of the same mindset re modifying and improving.

Looking forward to your input technically.

According to parts manuals, they use the same part. I have a hard time believing and trusting that because the XB (E) cams have a larger base circle than the Blast (W) cams. Hydraulic lifters are meant to operate in a given range-spec; outside that range and they are unreliable. So since my lifters came with my cams, I swapped them as well.

Eventually I plan to get hydro-solid lifters; the benefits of a hydraulic lifter (no need for adjustable pushrods, yet) and the stiffness of a solid lifter at high rpms. Seeing as I'm turning 7500rpm now, upping to 8k soon, it would be a logical upgrade.

Spare time? I work daily, own my own business and other online goodies. Every modification I do, is completed overnight or on a weekend. The jug/piston/head swap was on a Tuesday night, rode the bike to work the next day.

Hiya Jet-Lee,

Welcome to UKBEG!! There are only a couple of Blast owners in the UK so, as such it is a rare beast over here.

I have been tempted many times to modify my Blast by removing the bulky airbox, but have so far only changed the bars and screen, and had the wheels powdercoated white...lol

I'm a member of the Buell Blast forum in the US, but haven't really posted on there for the last couple of years.

Enjoy the chat and banter on here!! You will find many people willing to discuss and debate technical issues with you....although I am banned from the Tech Forum, as I know nothing... :sad1: ;)

Jill :sun:

Welcome, I`d like to hear it ,any vids out there? And not being rude ,but is there much difference between the original 500 top end to the 450 you have put on it.( I hit things with a hammer for a living).

There's vids on my youtube channel.

The Blast is just half of an XB9. Blast is 492cc where the XB9 is 984cc. The Blast uses a Lightning head (from the Buell tubers) with a Thunderstorm piston. The problem here is that the Lightning head has a 10º squish band where the piston has a 15º degree, this creates a ring around the outer edge of the combustion chamber of unburnt fuel. You have to overly richen the mixture to get a good running engine.

Using an XB9 head (which has larger valves, taller ports and larger cooling fins) with its bathtub-shaped combustion chamber (and corresponding domed piston), you raise compression from 9.2:1 to 10:1 along with the benefits of [basically] a factory port job. Then using thinner base/head gaskets, you bring the overall compression ratio to about 10.54:1. The XB heads/pistons have a 0º matched squish band which helps push all air/fuel into the combustion chamber for a more complete burn. You can get more power out of less fuel with an XB9 top end.

You cannot use an XB12 piston because it is dished for the longer stroke of the 1200. You can use an XB12 head though, as it's identical to an XB9 head.

I used the XB9 jug as well because I like the raw aluminum look and it has larger cooling fins as well.

Here is some vids...I'm no pro videographer, so bear with me:

This was before the tail swap:

Here's another from 2 days ago, just having some fun on a back road; phone was in my chest pocket, I forgot to zip it up till about 1/2 way through. I need a GoPro...
