Well, I don't find tuning engines pointless, and stating the bleedin' obvious about the handling and braking isn't the topic, or the point of the OP.
If it's done properly it shouldn't go bang, unless you're really pushing the envelope.
To be fair, I haven't done many bike engines, apart from messing about with two strokes when I was yoof, but I've done plenty of car engines.
Never had one let go on me yet. (Apart from a 32 litre 2000hp V16 boat engine but that's another story. Now that's an impressive Bang! lOl )
I guess no one on here's into tuning. Not much to talk abouth then. :tw:

viewtopic.php?f=8&t=11466 That's the spirit ! :yup:
Good stuff. Needs the 1340 barrels and some nice rods though. ;)
So how's it going?
I know the OP isn't interested in charging, but I recall some Guy on here putting a Turbo on his XB, and he did something to the crank. Can't remember what it was now.

It's going ok Mick but take note that I am using stock Buell parts, so no big bore, no posh crank, but this one has SE536 cams which are a favourite installation.

The secret is attention to detail on build, carb setup and ignition timing; workin with what you already have. Any Tom, Dick and Harry can put a 1340 kit on...

I think he broke it lOl
I believe if you go any bigger than the 1250 kit, the crankcase bolt between the cylinders has to be machined out, which doesn't do anything for reliability.

My 1947 JAP/Enfield is in a very high state of tune, and is fast enough to get a 2nd place in the Welsh pre '60 championships - racing against 'new' 850 Triumph replicas that use technology that hadn't been invented when Meriden closed down. The downside is, it needs precautionary rebuilds at least once per season.

My '99 Sportster "Sport" 1200 redlined at 5000rpm and I think was rated at about 65hp, so the way I look at it is that the Buell Thunderstorm engine is already a fairly tuned version of what went before, with its lighter pistons and flywheels, higher lift cams, higher compression, improved cylinder heads etc. if my memory serves?

Not that isn't possible to gain extra hp I'm sure, but I think Mr Buell himself has already done a fair chunk of that before getting too far into the law of diminishing returns, or diminishing reliability ;)

That's a great thread Pash, and I appreciate you're using stock parts, but that takes nothing away from the project. I love reading about stuff like that. I take my hat off to you Sir! :worthy:
I'll have a good read in more detail when I have more time, and I'll look at the links too. You lost me a bit with some of the stuff, so I need to digest it. :)

I found the web page about the Guy fitting a turbo to his XB, and working the bottom end.

Keep us updated on progress Pash. :eat:

He broke it big didn't he! But that was because he forgot to turn the boost down after replacing a popped off hose clip.
I wasn't aware about having to miss a bolt out with the 1340 kit. I agree, not good.
I have a steep learning curve coming when I finaly get my bike over here, and start to fettle. lOl
