My TRX has done about 24k miles and the wheel bearings seemed fine. I only put new ones in as a precautionary when I bunged a set of USD FZR forks on it. I can only assume that Fueller wheel bearings are under speced as an attempt to reduce unsprung weight :?

I just done my TDM (same bearings?) at nearly 60k-miles and those bearings were clearly on the way out: front started to feel a little vibey under braking (had already replaced the discs without improvement, d'oh!), sprocket bearing was actually broken (!). Still, the two smaller bearings at the rear (transmission side) were as good as new while the bigger one at the opposite was not too bad either. I replaced the lot, even top-quality bearings cost so little these days. Not too bad at all for 60k though, compared to 5 or less on XBs?

When you read Erik's interviews he always says how he would love to see the whole world driving Buell badged vehicles, like Honda has achieved. We'd have a world-wide shortage of bearings if that were to happen :)

Well, I got the bike back and feels nice. They changed otu the front as well as the rear ones, and it feels like the front end turning is smoother at low speeds.

As for the new bearings, he said they were 'superceded ones' and 'should last longer'...

Out of interest, what year is your bike and what colour were the seals on your old bearings :?:

Yeah, it is a 2007 model Super TT - no idea what colour the bearing seals were. The collapsed, I rode 1/2 a mile to the dealer.

So, I'm not sure what you guys are getting at? Did they change the bearings in 2004 or some other pre-2007 time?

I mentioned that it might have been a badly re-fitted wheel at the Buell Experience days, but the service guy said that would have been checked before they sold the bike...

There's only been one bearing upgrade and it was a long time before your bike was even on the market. The really shite bearings had black seals and the newer, less shite bearings had red seals - as currently used. Yours would have had these from the factory as a new bike.

If the spacers were crushed by some ham fisted fellow, it is unlikely that the dealer would have picked this up, nor looked for it. It is debateable if the dealer would have loosened the axles and re-torqued them...

Wouldn't be the first time a dealer has "upgraded" a bike to the older spec though Adam

That link on BadWeb makes a lot of sense and demonstrates quite neatly how a task, which on the face of it perfectly simple, can cause fatal damage to components if there is a lack of understanding in doing that job. A good post, that one.

Good post by Al but all common sense really and fairly standard proceedure when fitting any bearing sets.
Also, nicely demonstrates why I keep banging on about fitting, or at least measuring spacers when fitting these bearings

I have SKFs in one of my sets of wheels, they have black seals, and they are a quality bearing. The NTNs fitted in my original wheels have orange seals.

It could be the dealer has sourced their own bearings from a bearing supplier.
