XB12S Lightning 950 miles, ambient temp about 4centigrade.

Start cold engine, bike has not been started for a month or so, oil light goes out, after several minutes on tick over oil light flashes, check oil level and it has backed up to the filler top.
Start engine and run at 2000 revs light is out, when engine is hot light stays out at tick over and oil level is OK.
I usually start engine and ride, never seen oil light on, so this may be normal.

Is it the oil light or the Check Engine Light?

Has the bike had a 500 mile service? Has oil been added at any time since then to top up the tank?
Unless there is a lot oil of in the sump when the bike starts up I don't see how the level in the tank can increase.
If there is that much oil in the sump it suggests it is passing from the tank to the engine while the bike is standing idle. It does not seem like a normal amount.
Why should the oil light come on after running?
Sounds like either a dodgy wiring connection (doubt it is) or that you have no oil pressure.
I would be suspecting the oil pump / filter system is faulty.
If it's still under warranty I would get it checked before running the engine again otherwise drain the engine and oil tank, see how much oil is there and how it compares with the amount it should have,
Re appraise the situation before running the engine as otherwise there may not be much of the engine left!

Does it flash at a constant rate?

Erratic, and goes out with a few more revs 1200 plus, will put a pressure gauge on and test.
Don't normaly warm it up just start and ride, so this may be the norm in cold weather, will change oil and filter.
No problem when oil is hot, wrong way round, when I was in the trade, oil pressure dropped when oil was hot!

Oil pressure will be very low anyway ...thats just how they are.........probably nothing more than a faulty pressure switch (common ).

Crickey! connected pressure gauge 0 to 100 psi, after a minute or two spear just moved! did go up to nearly ten with a few revs! will try when hot.

You'll really scare yourself if you try the pressure with it hot lOl Like Kev said, they run a very low pressure - my mate drove his Knucklehead home with a sheared oil pump drive (all be it, very carefully lOl ) and there was no mechanical damage. I once had a Husky 510 enduro bike, this was basically a two stroke motor with a 4 stroke top end. It had no oil pump, the oil was dragged to the top end on the cam chain, and the rest of the motor was splash lubed. The motor lasted a good few seasons 8-)

Yes I was told it was an agricultural engine in a high tech (nearly) chassis, the lube system reminds me of a two cylinder boat engine I had, it relied on dippers on the big ends!

Harley engine appears to be all ball and roller bearings, no need for oil pressure as in white metal crank pins.
