Post subject:  S1 - Primary drive Tensioner Replacement

Why?

I've bought the part and I've started the job.
Looking thru the clutch cover the part looks exactly like the one
I'm gonna put in. Only I thought it was an updated piece - Am I missing something here?
And is a new primary cover gasket a must?
Any other advice on this subject would be welcome.
(Like how to get the gear shift lever off the shaft without breaking it.....EHHmmmmmm!)

Can you open up the lever with a screwdriver etc? If you new tensioner looks the same as the old one you've removed, it's probably already been done. I think there's some photos on here showing the difference if you do a search. If the gasket is the later metal type, it can be reused - depends on the state of it really :?

If you fit a new tensioner, it'll wear quickly initialy until the chain side plates cut into it and the blade rests on the chain rollers. The wear rate then settles down considerably. Check the primary chain tension in several places so you don't end up with a tight spot.

Use Coppaslip on the cover bolts and give the countersunk ones on the round covers a light 'nip' unless you have torque wrench that is accurate down to very low values.

The only change to the part is the thickness of the bent metal backing plate behind the beige-coloured pad; if your new tensioner has a thicker backing plate than the existing one, replace it (the difference in thickness is noticeable, and yes, there are photos of them around here or badweb). If they both have the thick backing plate, then return or pass on the one you bought!

Look there, its in the how to section and the pics you want are near the end.
Deffo need a new cover gasket( about £20), probably a new gear selector shaft seal too( about £3). Worth silicone sealing around the stator wires grommet ( near the starter motor). Note the method of keeping the cover bolts in pattern once removed!
I'd use loctite for the bolts rather than copperslip too as you dont want to go heavy handed on doing them up as you'l split the gasket, , especially on the gear selector pivot bolt.

:oooops: i was'nt very successful with leaving them without locking- had a few keep coming loose and i thought they were torqued ok imo, gear pivot was the worst, and are now just fine. Used the multi layer type cover gasket too which should have helped.

Thank you ALL very very much. You are giving me the confidence to carry on!

You see, I was a bit disillusioned yesterday after breaking the gear lever!
(Yes, I tried WD40 and a little bit of levering - which was obviously too much)
I really hate getting things wrong, especially where my pride & joy is concerned.

I'll get and order those parts millsy, along with a shift lever!

ive got my primary cover off and noticed ive got the old tensioner,how much are they,where can i get one and is it realy necesaery to replace.

Get it from your local HD/Buell dealer, perhaps Riders, or give Blackbear HD a call, ask for Nobby and mention UKBEG, you may get a discount.

Make sure the tensioner locknut goes on the correct way - ie NOT like a Nylock ;) .

The plastic insert is supposed to act as a seal against the cover. I've seen ones put on the other way around that don't leak though.
