I have an '02 X1 Lightning with Thunderstorm heads, do the valve clearences need to be adjusted or are they self adjusting? Engine sounds a bit "tappety" since I went back to standard exhaust. Thanks. |

They are hydraulic, and therefore self adjusting. (don't ask me how that works, I'd like to know myself ![]() |

Hydraulic lifter animation, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lorANZ1Tptw Honda motorcycles having hydraulic lifters since early '80s, at least. Air-cooled Buell's hydraulic lifters roots in early '50s. |

I dont know if it is the case with a Buell but some engines with this system are setable and need doing from base. I know because I have had them. Also, even though "fluid-is-fluid", they tend to like the right/clean oil. A point in case is BMW. Or at least mine anyway. Correct oil pressure is also needed. |

My xb9 would get a bit tappy after a thrash. It was the liest of my worries though so ignored it. Changing the small amount of engine oil every 2500miles with good stuff helped. Nate. |
