Post subject:  Help! Trying to remove steering head bearing races on 97 S3T

I'm following Mojomick's 2010 'How To' on the above subject and have got to the hammering out the bearing races part. He says to use an iron bar on the lip and bang it out. I am struggling with this. :x
The lip is small, only a couple of mm and the iron bars I have tried bounce off or round the edges and then bounce off. The steering lock protruding a third of the way into the head stock doesn't help either. Has anyone done this successfully? If so, any advice would be much appreciated. I don't mind buying the necessary bits/tools to do it.

as mojomick said "Use a large diameter bar to tap out the outer races from the headstock. Work evenly on the bearing lip, so as not to bruise the headstock."
and the main thing is a LARGE diameter bar to ensure a good contact area and work EVENLY around the bearing lip .

I think this is where I'm going wrong. :?

I tried 20/25mm bar but mild steel so the edge rounded off. Where can I get the hardened steel stuff?

Buy a long square shaft screwdriver, they work a treat for most things like that & are thin enough to fit on most protruding bearing lips & are hardened as standard. I've had one for years & knocked many sets of steering bearings out with it as well as a multitude of other uses. One of the most useful multi tools I've ever bought & has taken some proper abuse over the years.
All the best JB.

I've still got a wee bit of steel in my bottom lip that came off a hardened shaft I was using as a drift......early 1980's sometime :old:

The rod from a worn-out car shock is also useable for this kind of jobs

OK, so I thought I'm not going to mess about here and ordered a 300mm x 20mm bit of 316 marine grade stainless steel bar off fleabay for £7. They came out real easy then  . You can't beat the right tool for the job!
