I have a XB12R that I have not used since 2012 due to family commitments.

The bike has been for a service this week at a local HD dealer and when they have come to change the oil what was in the bike as turned into a thick paste.
They said that they cannot drain all of this from the bike and the only way to remove this paste from the bike is to perform a complete engine strip.

Has anyone has this problem with engine oil before?

Any ideas on removing this oil/paste without stripping the engine?

i would disconnect the oil lines, then wash out the crud from the swinging arm
reconnect & fill with oil, run it , then drain it & change oil & the filter

what oil did you have in it that partially turned into a paste ?

Is it the engine oil (ie in the swingarm ) or the gearbox oil that is the problem? I'm guessing it's more likely the gearbox oil as old engine oil should never do this however long it's stood but the gearbox is very prone to emulsification due to water getting in via the clutch cable.

I've seen this many times with bikes that've been laid up for years......engine oil breaks down into whatever elements and even when warmed up, comes out of the drain in 'globs' of semi solid shite

You ever have to strip a engine down because of it?

Do you recommend any oil other than the HD stuff?
