Fractured pinion gear

Post subject:  Fractured pinion gear
Have now sorted out the issue with my xb9r-03, seems the pinion gear has a large fracture in it and the shaft key has broken into two. The question is can I just put her back together and hope for the best and do a comp-test too see if any damage was done or will I need to be taking the motor off and cheking the pistons and valve´s and so on??

And how much of an issue is the gash in the pinion shaft....does it need to be replaced??

Could you also post some pictures of the oilpump (in- and outside if possible) and the cams?
Please, please, for my collection :-)

And another one of the oil pump gear, from the right side. What's sticking there at the top of the teeth?

its back!!....sure but not tonight. Oil pump looked just fine. dissasembled it looking for problems and is it pictures of the cam gears you want??

that would be me having troubles getting the oil gear off and it breaking from the crap-budget "gear-claw" i purchased leaving some nice fragments and since it was broke I just used some more violence and a polygrip-plier to get the thing off

I´ve only taken off the front rockerbox so far....but everything looked fine, and the pushrods don´t look bent. Will be getting to the back rocker later this week

I reckon it's dropped a valve (or worse) ?.....something has locked the cams causing the pinion/key to shear.
The fact you've been able to remove the cams rules out any seizure there, if the front rods aint bent, then presumeably you'll find the rear are ?

Looks like your spot on....it´s hard to tell but one of the pushrods looks a bit warped. I´m droping them off at a local motor cross shop here to have them all checked over before ordering parts. I´m having everything shipped over from the states since it costs about 3-4 times the recomended price here. What should I be doing whilst I wait...is there anyway of testing if it´s a "dropped valve" without removing the cylinder head??

Well you've had to remove the exhaust headers to get the camcase off, so you can already see the exhaust valves via the ports......and you'll need to remove the inlet manifold anyway.....

You wont need an independant opinion to determine if the pushrods are bent.....they'll be VERY bent.

Bent like this. That's a 3.5 mm drill bit fitting comfortably under it :shock: Believe it or not, before I bought the bike, this push rod was reinstalled by a 'Factory Trained' idiot working for a HD Dealer :tosser: after they rebuilt the top end to cure valve troubles :roll: I noticed it after curing a pushrod tube oil leak they'd caused :twisted:

Have after-market bronze (?) helical gear for oil pump drive, '04 XB12.
It's intended to reduce pinion gear's stresses.
Installation ...
Simply remove oil pump, swap gears & re-install?
Camshaft at in particular position?

No, that is the drive gear ie. it goes on the crankshaft, not the oil pump.
Bike wouild need stripping as in the photos above.
