Going to take the uly off the rod for a few weeks, as well as the usual oil and filters changes I want to change the wheel bearings and belt. Here my questions.

2006\08 Ulysses

What's the best wheel bearings to use?

New genuine belt? Where's best to get one?

Anything else I should look at changing? Piece of mind. (Not the oil pump gear, beyond my skill level)

Thanks in advance
:D

Sizes for bearings are in the useful info depository in the How To section. Go for SKF, get them from somewhere like Bearing King or Brammer (ask for a big discount).

Belt from Black Bear. I wouldn't replace it unless you had to, but a spare is always a good idea.

Depending on how many miles you have done, you may want to change your head races (generally fooked at 10k - Buell specific but Willy made some to fit - although Timkin taper rollers will fit they are not sealed) and your fork oil. A heavier weight fork oil will reduce fork dive and give you some adjustment. Screaming Eagle fork oil would do the job.

If you are changing the oil, you could consider getting the 2007 springs as these are progressive rate jobbies.

Davsag,

The oilpump drivegear is really not that hard to replace as it looks.
But you can check things first with removing the oilpump

and for wheel bearings you can use SKF
I have used the 6005 -2rsh for front wheel
and 6006 -2rs1 for rear wheel for my 2004 XB 12s

And for the headbearings ,maybe this are worth trying!?

I have not used this ones myself ,but this are with a seal and that's a plus.

Cheers

Be VERY careful buying bearings from Ebay, it's awash with fake SKF, FAG etc fakes. Go to Bearing Man like Pash suggested, and ask for at least 80% discount 8-) lOl (in fact, they'll probably offer it :yup: )

Whilst replacing the oil pump gear is fairly straight forward, the only tool you'll need that's not in yer 'normal' tool kit is a deep socket - I forget the exact size but it's about a 1". However, it's also very easy to do serious and expensive damage to your bike if it's not built back up correctly; take it to Maz for a Christmas prezzie 8-)

:yt: check skf and find out if the seller is one of their genuine retailers ......if not chances are they will be either very old stock bearings that they are selling where the grease could well be dried up OR as Adam points out fake bearings.

Why would he want to replace the oil pump drive gear? I thought by that year, they were all fitted with the updated phosphour bronze bit. :?: :?

That I don't know. I believe it was around 2006, also the updated one I think although better didn't solve the problem totally. Maybe just a bit of paranoia maybe not.

Thanks for all the advice. SKF bearings, and new head races it is then. I will ponder the oil gear pump.

Unfortunately Maz is miles from me, much as I would love him to give the uly the once over. I've been pondering over sending it to Big Boar in Chepstow. Any one got any feedback?

Any way the forum has helped again. Really dose help me keep lovin a Beull instead of owning any old motorbike.

The only people I would allow to touch my Buells with a spanner are Maz or Jon at Black Bear - SERIOUSLY

Other 'Factory Trained Techs' can, and do, cause no end of carnage. When I bought my favourite X1 with very low miles on it, the only people who had previously laid spanners on it to fix a top end oil leak was a well known Dealer. When I stripped the bike I found a broken valve guide (in the silencer   ) and a bent push rod - I think there's a photo of it in the 'How To' section :D

From Aber, you'd have a lovely ride upto Maz, you could watch him work on it (and understand more about your bike in 5 mins than learning the entire W/Shop manual) and have endless fun annoying him by re arranging his Torx drivers lOl
