Collected my bike from Maz on friday and it is/was running like a dream - thanks Maz!

After a journey that saw me travelling north as often as south, and about 300 miles, I eventually got near home and my speedo stopped working. I've replaced a broken speedo cable about 200 miles before, so it seemed a bit like duff luck, but hey ho.

After soaking my broken body in the bath on saturday morning and deciding that a run up to Papworth was beyond me (shame, it would have been great to catch up), I went up the garage to see what's up. [note to self, this is the Tech Forum, we don't need your f_cking life story]

Disconnect from speedo itself, speedo cable core out - all in one piece.
Test speedo itself by inserting cable core and spinning by hand (whilst making appropriate brmm brmm noises) - speedo working.

So, jump on the bike, ride it with the cable disconnected and in view, core does not seem to be spinning. Disconnect the cable from the drive by the front wheel, can see the end of the drive that turns the core, seems solid enough (gears engaged) but does not seem to be turning when I attach a cable-tie and ride the bike around in circles.

So, after much jiggling, and frying the hairs of my arm on the headers, I get the worm gear out of the drive, and it looks like this:

Clear signs of wear on it, but it does seem to engage with the other gears when I replace it, so it is not completely toothless/useless, but it does not rotate when the wheel does - so clearly something is buggered.

Question - has anyone had this themselves? Am I on the right track? Is it likely to be the whole speedo drive unit that needs replacing or just the worm gear shown ? Anyone got an ideas?

Has the drive tab that locates into the hole on the wheels hub broken off ?

At least, I assume that's what I am looking at.

Next you'll be telling me to check the bleedin' obvious first... :o :D

So, do I just get a new drive unit or is there a lesser fix ?

I'd replace the drive.....47.80 + vat.

Part no. is 67127-84A

With some careful welding (pref Tig) you can fit new tangs onto the drive but it's fiddly and time consuming. Not really an economic repair if someone else is doing for you and you've still got worn internals.

Maz

You're a star. I'll get one ordered today. Many thanks.
Bike's runninng lovely by the way, and the ProLite is a revalation. Oil change must be less than 100 miles away now, and I can start to properly explore the effect of the T'storms. 8-) 8-) 8-)

Adam - you're giving Maz sleepless nights suggesting stuff like that to me! Thanks though, but I am a danger with a can opener, let alone a screwdriver. As it is, it looks like I'll have to take the wheel off to replace the drive...what could ever go wrong.... OMG....

:hehe:
Buy a new drive ;)

Don't forget to take the pads out of the caliper before you remove it, it gives you a lot more 'wriggling room' ;) :D

S1nner, I had a drive go, it siezed solid and tried to wrap itself and the cable around the wheel! Luckily it didnt damage anything more than the cable but since then, every time I change the tyre on the front (i.e wheel out) I fill a small syringe with grease and squirt it into the cable drive aperture whilst turning the mech, this last drive has done 30000 miles and (touch wood) still works fine 8-)
