If the "FTDI TTL #someserial" entry is visible in ecmspy, the driver is installed correctly. No need to chase any com port bugs, as the com port is not used in this case. Run the short-cut test. If passed and an attempt to connect results in a "rx/tx shorted" error with the cable plugged into the bike, issue is most likely caused by a broken ground wire.

Ok don't have the bike with me today I'll try and have a look at the driver thing and report back when I can (I also don't understand most of what you're telling me when it comes to computers my knowledge is very basic)
Thanks

My knowledge is basic too, believe it or not. The Device Manager will tell you which COM port the lead is connected to. This is the one that needs to be identified in the ECMSpy config.

I'll take laptop home tonight I may have found a couple of problems . Driver had yellow triangle with exclamation mark next to it so I reloaded the driver and that symbol has now gone also I think it may have been the wrong com port as well.

Let us know what happens. Device Manager will tell us what the story is.

All com port issues will be avoided by using the "FTDI TTL #someserial" entry in ecmspy.

Tried again no change found device manager and com ports did some troubleshooting came back saying no problems with ports , uninstalled and reinstalled the driver still no change . I can't see it being a fault with the usb connection as it works fine with everything else I connect to it.
I have VCDS diagnostics on the puter and that works fine I'm at a loss what to do next.

The FTDITTL#someserial does not appear in the com port list in device manager when I connect the cable to the puter only com port 5 . I have tried choosing this port in the box that appears when you choose your port and ecm type and the same error message comes up.
Still :headbang:

Forgot to mention and don't know if it makes a difference , when installing the drivers a box comes up asking if I want to continue installing driver as it is not digitally singed :?: and in the driver device manager box it says it's not digitally singed no idea what it means .

Try setting everything up ready i.e. side stand switch depressed with a wedge, neutral gear, headlight fuse removed (save power), computer running, cable attached both ends, then and not before open the ECM spy program. turn bike ignition on with kill switch set to run then fetch com port.

Don't know why but If I start ECM spy before the cable is connected to the bike I get the failed message.

No, EcmSpy will not open a connection till the okay button of the connection dialog is hit.
