keep the 9 motor and fit 1050 barrels and you will have a nice strong (ish) motor and imo better than a 12 motor all day long

ah, really, where do 1050 barrels come from, ie what engine/age ect. I'm new to harley buell engines. mostly s/ch car engine I do, but need a change and love messing about with a bike so here I am. any help. advice. options. please feel free.
this came about as I'v bought an xb900r that has knackered g/box, so thinking if going in to fix it might as well do something interesting while there,
btw your input is also appreciated keep it comming :yup:

strip and price gear box repair first as could be a no go :sad1:

yep thats what I intend to do, then decide from there. just trying to learn what can be done if/when time come's.
that link gm posted I take it thats the 1050 barrels you spoke of??

RH/pinion shaft bearing is a complete nightmare to set up......you will have to be able to measure to 0.0001" and then grind/ lap to same, with.

Midlife, I will give you 100% for what you are trying to do. I have worked on stuff in the past and the cost can mount up big time. Given what Maz and Tubbs say IE - a tolerance of 0.0002" for roundness and taper, it is going to be a nightmare and could be a no win situation unless you are a "top line" engineer. The 9 is one thing the 12 is something else.

I would say fix the gearbox first, if it can be done, and leave it at that because you will end up with a great bike anyway. Messing with a gearbox is a world of pain to start with and doing anything else without proving it could be costly. Trust me on this you might be better just buying a sound XB12 unit, of which I have not seen many about, or a XB9 which there are a few.

Also you will have a problem selling the bike, if you want to, later and there are also the DVLA and insurance issues. All in all it sounds like expensive hardwork, been and done it, to me. Best of luck though.

I'm not a top line engineer but a good friend is, and like me he enjoys these challenges ;)

I dont really want a standard 12 unit, and yes they are hard to find a decent price anyway.
I dont mind stripping/building g/box's ;)

I wouldn't be selling the bike, this is for my selfish enjoyment if I do it ;) {I have a new waiting to be registered xb12s tbh dont wish to start taking that apart}
please dont think I would be so arrogant as to ask advice guidance from men who know the job, then ignore they'r advice, I have taken on board every word folk have said here, including yourself. been reading on here a few months now and its obvious Maz/Tubbs are the men, hence why I asked before I do anything,
appreciate your concern and input, taa. Tam

Hi Midlifecrisis.
I`ve done the conversion that your thinking of . my reason was the gearbox would jump out of second gear, worn striker dogs and required three gears to fix, I sourced all my parts and gaskets from Chicago Harley,At the time it was a little over $2 dollars to the £, i managed to get an 06 xb12 crank for $175 (£78) second hand but cost £128 to have shipped from Florida in 3 days, you`ll need new primaries headers and pistons ,as the 9 pistons are domed and would give a compression ratio of 12.5-1,the 12 pistons are flat topped ,you`ll also need a 12 throttle body.got mine from ebay uk for £14.99 (bargain) the only problem i could see with the wiring loom is there is no feed for the exhaust valve on the 12 exhaust but i`ve got a heavily modded standard can, i had no issue`s with the crank bearings and all is fine with the motor after several thousand hard miles. if i can be of assistance i`d be only to happy to help...Chris

Later 9s should have the same loom as an equivalent 12 and have the 3 pin plug under the seat for the exhaust valve (but then you will need the valve and the cable and the exhaust)...
