For some months my '99 X1 has been weeping oil from the crankcase joint below the front cylinder – not enough to drip on the floor, but sufficient to attract road dirt and annoy me. So the time has come to split the engine and stem the flow.
Not having delved deeply into the guts of a Buell before I wonder what are the “standard mods” that I should make whilst the motor is disembowelled? Half a lifetime of running Brit twins and triples have shown that there are always things that can be improved on from the factory build, so I assume the same must apply to the Buell motors.
I have the factory manual and a full set of imperial hammers to assist the process.

I await the words of wisdom from the sages.

What is your breather configuration? Is it leaking cos the crankcase pressure is too high?

It sounds like alot of grief for a tiny leak
My M2 has a similar leak and just wipe it away every now and then, stops things going rusty

An S1w I had pissed oil out of the oil pump gasket (and I think at the crank case join) all cos the breather filter was blocked...

Are you SimonT my ex school chum :?: If so, run it on EP90, that stuff's too thick to leak ;)
I've just found a photo of us, must be over 30 years ago

Thought about using radweld to stem the flow, but that is a bit drastic.
Crankcase bolts are torqued up to the correct value. Breather vents to atmosphere and check valves in the head are free. The lump is now on the floor in the garage so there’s no going back.
Yes Mr Brown. That is I next to you looking over your right shoulder with a full head of hair and not a grey one in sight ably assisted by Paul Dallow and an oily Steve Bowers.

I thought about using SuperGlue to fix a puncture. It did not work . That was a daft idea but using RadWeld in oil is just insane. Imperial hammers will not work as it is mostly UNC.

Best of luck.

I must dispute that old froot. Some years ago, Squiz (formerly of this Parish) was out on a spin with us and he collected a 2" rip in his back tyre. One way and another, we got his bike back to my gaff where we sucessfully Superglued a patch made from inner tube onto the inside of his tyre and then stuffed an old 21" inner tube into the tyre. Worked a treat, and then he road at usual 3 figure speeds (with pillion  ) back across the Country to Derby. This was at night with his alternator rotor rapidly parting company with the end of the crank

................and some of you still ask 'is it ok to plug a tyre?'

Ah and this is why I thought it might work but I tried to do it after pulling out the nail and sealing it from the outside.

Great minds and all that Adam :yup:.
