Hello,
Its been a while since I've needed to call on your collective knowledge but I could do with some pointers please.
The throttle cable on my XB9 had become very sticky so I took the grip assembly apart to try and locate the cause. With the cables loose I can pull on the throttle cable and it opens fine and snaps closed again when I let go without any excessive resistance. When I reassemble the thing it sticks open. No matter what I try this never gets any better.
After looking at it for about 2hrs this evening I'm at a loss.
If anyone can chip in with something useful i might be overlooking that would be great.

Andrew

Is the lower cable frayed inside the outer? Are the cables oiled? Are the cables trapped in the switchgear/housing (check the faces meet perfectly)?

Also if you got bar end weights, stops or mirrors the rubber grip can catch on them and stop it returning.
Also at the engine end if the cable outer end ferule properly located.

Both these happened on mine after putting on new bars, with same result

The cables don't look frayed, they are a bit 'mis-shapen' where they have been seated in the same position over time. I have not oiled them so will try that. Its almost like when I clamp the assembly back together the return cable is getting trapped but there is no way of seeing if thats the case. I did pay close attention to the cables being seated properly as they only 'fit' in the correct way. All the individual components look alright but they don't work as a whole.

No bar end add ons so that rules that out and I did check the engine end and all looked ok.

I could buy new cables and/or assembly but wanted to rule everything else out first.

Thanks

Fraying can be inside the outer. Return cable behaves quite differently when loaded...

Have you taken out too much free play in the cables ? I had a similar problem with my V Rod, it turned out that I had taken too much slack out - loosened them off a little and everything worked fine again.

try to get the cable runs as straight / free as possible. if the cable is too tight a bend that can stop the throttle shutting correctly
