Post subject:  I've binned my XB

About 3 weeks ago, I dropped my XB12Ss.
It was a combination of cold tyres + cold teperatures + crappy road surface = not enough grip.
It was a low speed spill, I'd just turned out of Bury Hill Car Park down here in Sussex, and was accelerating up to traffic speed, and then lost it and ended up on the ground.
Mostly superficial damage, but frame and swing arm damaged by the slide up the road.
I was lucky and got off with just a fractured thumb, which is healing nicely.

The bike went to the HD/Buell dealer I bought it from, and they sent an estimate for £3,800 for repairs to the insurance company.
The bike was insured for what I bought it for in November 2010 - £5,000.
The insurance company have written it off.
It wasn't even run in!!
I haven't had an offer from the insurance company yet, but I'm hoping to get the full amount back.

Anyway, the point I wanted to make, is for those of you who bought bargain basement Buells when the company sold off their stocks of bikes.
Check what value you've got your bike insured for.
If your bike is insured for what you paid, and you have a minor icident like me, you'll probably get it written off.
If you want to keep it, it might be best to insure it for the pre-sale RRP, then you may get to keep it on the road if the same happens to you :)

Insurance companies pay you their valuation of the bike's worth at the time. The amount you insure it for doesn't really matter as long as there isn't a massive discrepancy.

2 bikes and a car written off here, so know the drill.

If it makes you feel better when I crashed the bike I got paid out more than I bought (and insured) it for.

If your bike is written off make sure and tell the insurance co you want to buy the salvage off them - normally only £100-150 and you can make a lot of money selling the parts - an XB engine is worth over £1000 used especially with such low miles for example.

Start collecting for sale adverts of similar Xbs - age/mileage to show the insurance assessor as they migth have some wacky ideas of an XBs worth - kind of difficult to judge just now especially for someone who isn't particuarly knowlegable about Buells.

I was told that if the estimate exceeds 75% of the value of the bike, they will write it off, and 75% of £5000 is £3750. Insurance companies are greedy bastards so brace yourself and get ready to take it like a man.

What was the value and the damage on the cars?

First car:
1996 Honda Accord 2.0 coupe - 10 years old at time.
£1500 car, £3000 damage

Second:
1989, Honda CRX - 18 years old at the time
£1000 car, £1200 damage.

See, they price them with brand new parts from the dealer and dealer labour rates. The Accord needed a new bumper, headlight, bonnet and wing - £3000 my arse.

I bought both the wrecks back for £100 each, fixed each with parts from scrappie for ~ £250 each then sold them for £1000 each.

Yea, bad news about the bike :(

As a recent convert to the XB path, I can say that this is deffo my kind of bike and I'd be absolutely gutted if anything happened.

Good luck with the insurance payout etc!

Bad news, Garry. :( But glad that you are ok.

+1 to what the ax man said. The value that you insure it for is pretty meaningless when it comes to payout time. The chances are that they won't even get close to the £5k that you paid for it.

And +1 to collecting ads. You'll probably (initially) only be offered second hand value for it, so you need to big that up as much as possible.

Sad that a low speed spill can write it off, but I can already hear the mumblings coming from the eastern suburbs of Manchester.

Sorry to hear about your bike, insurance seems like legalised robbery, hope they give you a decent pay out.
