Track days are more fun than riding on the road

Yes, very much so, but I'd wait until it warms up a bit as it is very difficult to get heat into the tyres and keep them warm at thsi time of year.
Treat it like a learning opportunity , not a chance to race other people. It is easy to see the red mist, and want to move up groups before you are ready. I've seen a few bin their bikes because of this on their first day out.

Me and some pals are going up to Knockhill for a beginner's trackday in April - £85 for two hours plus some instruction.

Never done one before, but should get my eye in for the summer's riding.

I take it you mean 6 - 20 minute sessions = the whole day ??

No, knockhill do it differently, they just open the track and all hell lets loose.

As a newcomer it's important you break the day up. Two hours is a heck of a long time on the track and you tire out, the breaks give you chance to wind down and replenish fluids. Trackdays in summer are tough, wearing leathers all day, in the sun, the last session is the one to watch, after a big lunch, you're tired and concentration levels are low, my spill at Cadwell was on the last lap of the day :oooops:

Go to Cadwell, do group 1, wear a beginner hi vis vest and do it. Do it in whatever weather appears on the day, i've done them in rain and been the best trackday ever when you're in intermediate group double lapping 'racers' on wet tyres on you stock Uly with stock tyres. Made me a really confident wet weather rider doing that, you get lots of warning the bikes going to let go in the wet, on a smooth track you feel the feedback better than a rough ill maintained county council road.

Book it and do it, be the best thing you'll do.

In view of your location do Mallory! It's great track, do small windy ones first, forget Silverstone, Rockingham, Snetterton and BH Full Circuit, the BH Indy, Cadwell and Cadwell are great circuits, Oulton is a reasonably long circuit but is varied, but they're chronic with the Db meter :tosser:

Yup, me too, Cadwell in torrential rain on the 748R taught me so much.

As always, I'll plug HRT at this point as my experiences with them have always been very positive.

Would agree with all of the above. Mallory is a good track to begin as it is so quick to learn, and that means plenty of goes to get it right each session.

For anyone familiar with most Stateside track reg's, are the requirements pretty much the same in UK as here (oil filter, fill and drain plugs safety wired, lights covered/removed, mirrors off, etc)? This manual is a great intro to track riding, and also gives the tech inspection checklist for what is needed (at least for this organization on these tracks).
