Not sure I understand the appeal. What's wrong with the old V-Twin? Isn't that part of the appeal of these bikes? It's certainly one of the things that attracted me to Buell.

A higher revving engine seems to make more sense on sports bikes, but for an adventure model?

I have a Uly..... it's an absolutely brilliant bike in many ways, and yes the aircooled engine is full of character, but to be honest, it really could use a little extra power. Although it has a claimed output of around the 100bhp mark,it doesn't feel it.

If they could reliably increase the output to around the 115-120 bhp mark, the bike would be an absolute peach.

just fancy bit more reliability, mine is one of the first and dont want the old girl to turn into a moneybox. love buell and dont really want to go for gs or ktm, need a massively tall bike, im 6foot9.

Nothing wrong with the air cooled motor, just need to have a few more BHP for that "get up and go"

I have been doing loads of research on adventure bikes.
There are no real ADV. bikes out there unless you build your own using a base.
Once you have taken the criteria of a trip into account, you are limited to just one pratical bike that does more than any other, sadly that is the BMW GSA.
You can substitute this for the GS1200 or more closely the GS1200 SE that is due in July.
I so wanted to do the trip that I have planned on a Buell, but the fuel capacity alone was a non-starter. Add to that the lack of reports and performance of the Buell in hostile territory regarding the performance of the belt drive and capability of dealing with the heat of the machine in general and the choice is obvious.
If you take into account shipping back to the UK from somehwere like Africa and the fact that if the bike is dropped on one side, it is effectively written off You could do this on a rock in the UK, let alone Africa.

I cannot see the point in putting the 1125 engine into the existing frame for an ADV. bike, it defeats the object, they should just build a touring machine like the S3 as the extra height of the Ully with the 1125 engine is all but useless in practical terms.

Unless the Buell team design a new frame and fuel cell that actually gives you a realistic range, then they will sell fewer units than they could in the real world.
What they also need to consider is the fact that BMW have a huge success on their hands with a 10K+ bike that ticks most of the boxes.

I am a stingey twat when it comes to buying bikes, but I need to lay down some decent dosh for a bike that is going to do a job, sadly Buell, as cheap as they are, are not going to do it......I so wish that they could, as I would save myself a lot of money...

Bollocks,what you need is something light and simple that can be fixed and welded back together in the bush using simple tools and bits that have fallen off of ancient Peugeots, Mercs and hen-houses. Yamaha XT or Enfield will do nicely.

Break your Beemer's fancy traction control, ABS brakes, electronically controlled suspension, notoriously vulnerable transmission, oil up yet another clutch, or break your back on digging out the fully dressed 300+kg mamoth for the zillionth time out of the mud or sand and your great adventure trip will be over.
