Deposit down on demo XB12XT with 300kms on it. Black with silver coloured engine - when did the black coloured engine come out ???

Anyway picking it up on friday (hopefully) as I'm having a comfort kit fitted.

Any advise appreciated.

I'm holding off doing anything much to it till I've "known" it a while...then may consider moving the engine breathers etc.

Is there other work that may need to be considered in the future ? I see some mention of belt tensioners ? is this a problem area ?

It'll be due its first service at 1000 miles but I was thinking of changing at least the engine oil (maybe filter) at maybe 500 miles.

I have lots of silly questions to ask in the meantime.....

- where is the oil drain ?
- should I drain it hot like my other bikes ?
- what type oil does it like ?
- how much (volume) of oil ?

Sorry if these have been asked before...just point me to where ?

Any other things I need to keep an eye on ?

Any tools I'll need - I have all the metric tools I ever need (sockets, hex bits, spanners, vortex metric sockets etc etc) but do I now need lots of imperial tools too ???????

Thanks guys.

Eric.

Before you get yelled at by the longtime members on here, I'll cover these...

Black engines - 2009 model year.

Consider a Free Spirits tensioner if you plan on keeping the bike long term. Lots of information on this here - see the howto section. The belt doesn't stretch, so when you bounce up and down you're transferring forces through the rear wheel and the front sprocket which will be reduced with a tensioner. That's the non-technical description at any rate.

Oil drain - there are two under the bike (surprise surprise). One for engine oil and one for transmission oil. Use Harley oils as recommended in the manual you'll get with the bike. Drain it hot. See the howto section for more details.

Things to keep an eye on? Suspension setup needs to be done right to enjoy the bike's potential. I'm sure there's more, but I'm a rider more than a tinkerer.

You will needs some imperial tools - see the howtos for more details.

Most of all - enjoy the bike. I've got an 09 XT as well and love it - I'm sure you will too.
:yup:

Thanks, I plan on enjoying it once I get my grubby little hands on it !

I'm hoping the documentation that comes with it helps answer some questions.

Sorry for the silly questions and excuse my impatience !

Eric.

I think you'll get cut a little slack to start with then woe betide too many daft questions. If your skin's thick enough don't worry about it. ;) There are loads of answers to just about anything here or look in the old archive,(you can find a link to it on here too)
Oh yeah Welcome too :D
