Good - we've plenty of time to plan it :P...

This is wot I wrote - just playing with copy and paste from the old forum....

One idea is to have a Buell Challenge that includes visits to North Wales, and Scotland - inc. Cape Wrath on the North West coast.

We could use well known landmarks such as castles, bridges etc. as compulsory 'checkpoints' with a set start or finish point.

The Challenge would have to be completed in a set time, but which way round you did it and which roads you use, would be up to you.

I wrote a long piece in reply to that... just as the forums went down!

IMO, and I really don't want to appear critical of the IMMENSE achievement, JoG to LE is just a few metres off the mark for me.

John O'Groats is not the most northerly point, that is Dunnet Head which is a few miles to the west of JoG. Lands End is not the most westerly point of the British mainland, which is Ardnamurchan Point near the Isle of Mull. Nor is Lands End the most southerly, which is Lizard Point.

So, whilst it's a long way, JoG to LE is just, but only just, missing the mark. Top to bottom or right to left would be just as challenging and have, for me, more meaning.

Cape Wrath is an arse to get to. You can't get a vehicle within about 12 miles, you need a ferry and a minibus to get there, IIRC. Not an insurmountable problem for those who face nearly 2,000 miles in 5 days but something to consider when thinking of photo opportunities, for instance.

The challenge had to be just that, a challenge and irrispective of the detail, the challenge is one all the sponsors could relate to and hence guage the scale of what we were doing. I feel sure that next year will be equally challenging and really hope to be there. :)

You have a great opportunity to recreate yourself Norm with the new website. Why stay a grumpy old sourpuss when you don't have to.

What you need is a Victor Meldrew avatar

Just a suggestion and I very clearly recognised what everyone had achieved.

Well for 2010,how about a UKBEG challenge, you need to have a pic of a Buell taken by as many different castles as possible, it doesn't need to be achieved in 1 weekend and it will get a bit of competition going on here-you could even break it down to Tubers, XB's and wetties :!: :!: :)

Beef, IMO what made this years challenge so great was having the common goal (get there in time) and meeting up each night with a group of people I'd never met before but who turned out to be a great bunch. I can appreciate that your idea has merit but I wouldn't view it in the same light.

Each to his own however but remember one objective was to raise money, if seeking sponsorship, would people buy into it :?:

I see your point but it doesn't have to be the main challenge, lets face it, some people cannot get time off to suit some such meets, being able to take part in something that runs all year could help some to meet others. If someone is planning on visiting a castle on a certain day, then they could post to see if someone else can meet them there or on route, does it really need sponsorship?

Likewise spreading the time and cost over a period would mean more people could get involved, maybe we consider a challenge and a marathon, one time limited like this years and one run over the year like your idea.
