Post subject:  09 XBS starting issue ?

got a call from a friend , so I dropped around

history of bike is...
initially seemed like a TPS issue as it was iratic at certain throttle points
he put it away for a while , then the battery died so he renewed that
BUT
owner said he renewed the battery, but with an optimate connected to save loosing the ecm ?
I was wondering if it could have spiked the ECM ?

TPS as per 08 onwards has been done
plugged ecm spy into it & no fault codes are showing at all ?

it wont start , with a fully charged battery
ignition switch on pump cycles , but then it coughs as the starter is turning over

the injectors have been cleaned as they were not spraying correctly & now spray mist correctly

I was thinking if someone has a spare ECM to try swapping it over ?
cant see any loom damage at the headstock area

how old is the fuel ? this modern stuff don't like to sit around for to long before it starts going off, and cloging up the works, filters , injectors , pumps . a pressure gauge to check its reaching correct pressure would be nice to know that fuel system is ok , and a fresh tank of fuel woudn't go a miss.
with the " it was iratic at certain throttle points " before being " put it away for a while" did it fouled the plugs and needs a plug change , and once it does start, you still need to find out what the original cause of the "iratic at certain throttle points" .

Cheers Barney
Sorry I should have said
Has had new plugs & fresh fuel pressure is good
I was thinking if the TPS sensor may be defective as it will run if you catch it with some throttle but cuts out if left

Sounds like you're on the right track to me Don.
If everything else seems ok & it sounds like it is, it has to be one of the sensors. Plus your initial idea/thought that it may be the ECU, would also point me to the sensors before the ECU.
Good luck & well done so far.

:yt: or could be air leak ....manifold , or not sure if the 9 is same as 12 with blanking plug around throttle body area .

What’s the fuel pressure?
Are the injectors connectors on the correct injector?
Did he replace the TPS?

I very much doubt it is the ECM.

Hi, Did you resolve the TPS issue - I am having similar issues that point to the TPS. If you replaced the TPS where did you get one from and have you part number/manufacturer details
