I've never had a bike without a centre stand before, and I've already ordered one for the Bulldog, but so far as I can see there's absolutely no way of attaching one to my Ulysses. I've never used paddock stands before, so I know nothing about them, and I need some guidance.

I think a headstock stand would be best for the front, and a paddock stand for the rear; if anyone disagrees, please say so. Do I need Buell-specific items, or will generic ones do; there's plenty on eBay...

And how exactly does the rear paddock stand attach to the bike?

Go on, give us a clue...

Ive got Micron front and rear. Micron did a fork support and bottom yoke (steerer tube) support.

Keep your eyes peeled on eBay...

......and if you go for a fork support, remember that XB forks are unequal lengths

Front forks unequal lengths? Why on earth did Buell do THAT?

Armed with your ideas, I've done a bit of Googling and eBaying, and I think I might go for an Abba Superbike stand. With their front wheel lift as well, that seems like the best option for me; I will rarely if ever have anybody to help me put the bike on paddock stands.

Can anybody see any drawbacks?

Using paddock stands is a one person affair. I use Micron f+r if using a headstock type for removing forks (but iirc I had to turn the locating pin down a bit on the lathe as the correct size pin wasn't supplied) For fork support types which are less of a faff than headstock support types, I bought a cheapo one and cut + rewelded one leg shorter. If you've got a mate who can weld, he'll do it for a drink.

.....also, if you go for a front paddock stand that uses pins to locate in the hole in the bottom of the fork, remember to cut down the pin that locates in the RH leg or you'll take the thread off the spindle and fuck the thread in the leg !

Micron style rear stand for me and home made steering head type front stand. most stands are too narrow for the XB swingarm , so if you get one that is all you have to do is lay it on it's side, stand on the leg that's laid on the floor and pull the other one up until it is the width you need ;) I have the gimme gimme gimme stand which I use on my X1 but have never checked if there is anywhere it can locate on the Uly.

I use both paddock stands and an abba stand.
You don't need two people to use a paddock stand just got to be a bit confident when using it.
I've also got the abba front lifting bit I only use the abba stand if I'm taking the wheels off any other time like cleaning I ise just the paddock stand. The abba takes a bit of getting used to and can be fiddly but is very solid plus when you sell the bike only need to buy new adaptors.

Thank you, one and all. I think I'm going to go for the Abba stand. I'm tempted by their one that hoists the bike right up in the air, but can't really justify the cost for how often I'm likely to use it.

Oh B****R! Just spoke to Abba; they say their stands won't fit the XB12 models- nowhere to locate the adapters in the swingarm pivots. Feck Feck Feck...

Losttyke, have you used the Abba stand on a Buell?

Cor, yes please; that's very kind of you. :yup: :yup: :yup:  I can't get up to collect it without a good deal of disruption until some time next week, though; I work shifts, and I'm on duty tomorrow through to Sunday inclusive. Monday would be OK for me if you're going to be there, though. PM me your address and contact number if that's OK.
