Failure of main g/box and crankshaft bearings gets mentioned here occasionally. Is this a result of a redesign of the harley motor and a poor choice of bearing(s)/g/box or what ?

The XB driveside main is different to that of a Tuber, from what I understand, to make it easier to produce and assemble, keeping production cost down. I don't think it's anything to do with the quality of the bearing.
Check out the Nallin Racing website and he'll give a seminar on its problems.

The old tuber motors had twin taper roller bearings where the XB's have a single roller bearing as it is cheaper to build the engine as you don't have to set the crankshaft up.
