Hi guys,

As I posted few days ago I had problems with my Firebolt in Germany. Engine is knocking. As in the pic the oil pump gear has broken no pressure etc... what will be the surprise when open it
Rebuild the engine; buy another engine; sell the parts on ebay? :?

Any suggestion/opinion is appreciated.

Cheers,

Roberto.

Depends how much damage there is.

I would pull the cam cover and inspect.

Drive gear has stripped due to the pump being locked by debris from elsewhere in the engine.........it's not a great picture but it looks like the pinion bearing has broken up ?

Muffins did that when the end of a valve spring broke .......... luckily I stopped it instantly so didn't starve the rest of the engine.

I would have both crankshaft and big end bearings checked too. Debris from the broken gear probably spun around for some time, before the teeth sheared off.

...and after 69.000km you should have an eye on the pistons and the exhaust valves!
If you have the engine disassembled the output shaft bearing should be replaced by a new one...
The same for the bearing from the clutch basket.
This bearings are not to expensive...
A lot to do my friend.
Do you have a time shedule for friday/ saturday?

Best regards from Germany!

I can't remember on Muffin but the parts needed were valve springs oil pump and new drive gear + a full set of cams as the debris from the broken drive gear took one tooth off every cam. Original problem was tip broke off valve spring and found it's way back to oil pump , spring jammed pump solid causing it to strip teeth off drive gear , debris from that broke a tooth from each cam gear, no other damage was done as none of debris got pumped anywhere else due to pump stopping instantly and also thae fact I heard it jam and switched engine straight off.

About 50km before the engine had this problem HD Luxembourg drilled out one of the exhaust stud.
Need to check.

Did they take the head off when they drilled the stud out? Did they put the collets in correctly? Did they let the tappets bleed down?

May be a coincidence, but there is the potential that they caused the failure.

Still reckon this is pinion bearing failure........if you open up the pix, I cant see the end of the pinion needle race and debris in the pump looks like bits of said needles ?

No Nick,
They just drilled with the head on and I belive they didn't let the tappet bleed
