just fitted new air filter over stock and the change is all good ![]() but wanted to ask about the grill just behind the petrol cap - whats it for? i always assumed it led through to the air box but it doesn't seem to access the box in any way... i might have missed its purpose as didnt have much time. if its just cosmetic is it possible to remove the lid of the box so that air can flow in through the grill? or is this going to cause reliability problems? cheers aks EDIT - is it ever possible to have TOO MUCH clean filtered air going in? |

Think it's mostly cosmetic IMO. there is a gap all around the tank/air filter cover. I drilled the air filter box on the N/side with a 1 1/4" hole saw. Four of them to get more in't box. Nate. |

Isn't that the air intake now that they have done away with the intake through the frame? I think you'll find that the inner airbox is already full of holes to draw the air in. |

You mean like this? http://www.trojan-horse.co.uk/prods/96.html that looks ideal but are they really charging £46 + vat and shipping for that piece of red plastic? ![]() |

Do a search for Ultimate Airbox on the Archive before you make your mind up. It would be wrong of me not to point you in that direction.... |

On early XBs there was a hole through the frame that fed air into the airbox - on later models ( 2006 + ? ) they closed off the hole ( that's why later models hold more fuel ) and put a gridded opening in the airbox behind the filler cap, and the inner airbox cover gained a few holes ... |

was just thinking I might make a few holes on the inner airbox directly behind the grill to give a more direct route to the filter as currently the holes are currently on the opposite side of the grill... |

Is that right? (I have a 2004 XB9SX) Surely the scoop would get more aire especially when on the move? The grill in the airbox is so small. |

I did some *tests* with a pressure transducer in the airbox with a full 08 and full 05 configuration and the 05 had a higher pressure.... |

So there is a ram air effect from the scoop? or are you just talking about using different air box lids and not full 2008 bike (aie inlet from tank cover) vs full 2005 bike (air inlet from scoop)? If the scoop does make a bigger effect then this would be harder to replicate on a dyno as no rush of air up the scoop? |
