hi guys,

after having Uly for the 1st week and having replaced the badly square off rear conti road attack with a brand new one last Thursday - today i went out to finish the scrubbing in process and to my horror - as i got home a noticed a round silver shiny thing in my new tyres...a nail :headbang:
its in the centre of the thread and its blowing too...

hopefully i can get this plugged otherwise i wasted £120 in less than 150mls...

this is the 3rd time this year that i have punctures in my bike tyres...how much crap is there on the road???

not Happy!

But the Uly had me grinning the whole time and i think i know have the zero gravety screen set to my liking...and the suspension set up, although i still get a nasty wheel wobble at around 40-50mph when i take the hand off the handlebar....

ooh well, back to the tyre place tomorrow...
wish me luck that it can be repaired...
Shame continetal dont offer the same as Avon - if you pick up a puncture within 500mls Avon apparently give you a new one for free...

Are there any shops where you can purchase road hazard insurance with the tyre purchase/install? I don't know if it's offered in the UK, or even for motorcycles, for that matter, but tyre shops here in the States offer it as an option, at least for cars (never checked on bikes - the thought just occurred to me as I read your post). Just thinking, as you have had so many "incidents" already - might be worth it, if available.

i have just been in the garage again and had a look at the tyre and the tiny hole...its now not blowing at all...

the nail was only 7-8mm long and may not have pierced all the way down....

however when i first removed it on a warm tyre it was blowin bubbles???

maybe now that its cooled down it shrunk...who knows..

i will keep an eye on it...for now.

I doubt you will find exactly these in UK, but repair kits that are certified for higher speeds are available, although not cheap:

Same thing happened to me with around 200 miles on the tyre, put a dose of Ultraseal (now called Puncturesafe) in, it did exactly what it said on the tin, lasted for the life of the tyre, 3000+ miles.

Same happened to me with a brand new rear roadsmart. (think I got 300 miles out of it though!) Had it professionally fixed with a mushroom plug. Hole drilled, surfaces prepared with a sander/dremmel surfaces painted with a vulcanising solution, plug inserted and seated, and solution allowed to cure. Further coat of black rubber sealant applied over the mushroom from inside, and job done. Kept an eye on the tyre pressures and its never lost a bit. (more than it would have anyway). Mine was dead central on the tread and in one of the tyre grooves. I have a bit of faith in a repair like that and now treat the tyre as it was new. Its not like I do any trackdays though, -I may have a different view then.

I, too have a small pinhole leak in my rear tyre, so I was digging in my owner's manual, and, surprisingly, found mention of tyre repair:

"Replace punctured or damaged tires. In some cases, small punctures in the tread area may be repaired from within the demounted tire by a Buell dealer. Speed should NOT exceed 50 mph (80 km/h) for the first 24 hours after repair, and the repaired tire should NEVER be used over 80 mph (130 km/h)." And then of course, the ubiquitous: "Failure to follow this warning could result in death or serious injury. (00118a)"

Do you drive over 130 km/h? There's the rub. It seems like a sound guideline, really. In any case, my tyre is flattened out through the center enough to be ready for a change, and I wouldn't be happy feeling I must always ride under 80 mph.....

hi guys,

i may have been lucky...
i have check the pressure several time today and it hasn't dropped...
i than took the bike for a run to warm up the tyres and check twice...no pressure loss and eventhough i can see the tiny hole in the thread its not bubbeling when i put spit on it...

so i may have gotten away with it...
we shall see...

PS: yes i do ride over 80mph...especially as i am taking the Uly over to Germany in a few weeks...and there is no speed limit on some of the roads i will go on....plus i want to max it out once....

What else did you expect from an american company, a country where it's even impossible to get a hot coffee "to go", because it might harm you if spilled unfortunately.

not much use to you now, but i buy avon storm ST's, and i dunno if its an avon thing, or just the shop i use, but if i get a puncture when theres more than about 4mm tread left on it i get a free replacement.

kinda tempted to hammer a nail in when its gettin close lol.

hi guys,

here is another update:
yesterday I took the Uly for a long ride down the coast to see if the little hole is lossing air or not when warm. I started off having about 37.5PSI in the rear. I than stopped for breakfast before heading down to Chicester Marina. I check the hole and it was not blowing bubbles at all... :clap: but it should lasat for long.... read on.

One thing I did notice is that between 45-55mph there is destince front wheel wobble - which i have tried to cure by setting up the suspension and also adjusting the Zero Gravity screen etc...but so far to no success.

I thank return home via a quick stop of HD Guildford and with about 10mls from home the bike started to feel very wired...and loose on the rear.
I got home safely and check my tire pressure and it was down to 8.5PSI :headbang:

however the little hole wasn't bubbling...i was completely baffled how this could happen?
i pumped the tyre up to 44PSI and headed to my local Tyre guy in Reading. After only 10mls ride there the pressure was down to just over 20PSI. When Mark checked it i had another 2nd puncture! this is a joke...2 punctures in less than 1 week!!! The rear has now been plugged but its still loosing pressure slowly so i think i have to bite the bullit and get a new set!

One thing my tyre guy told me after inspecting my front tyre is that as this is 50% worn and there are some "steps" in the thread he reckons this could be the cause of the front wheel wobble....i will take a picture and upload it later..

so what tyres do i go for?

Maxxis? - the cheap option
Michelin PR2 - as i have them on my R1100S and like them
BT021? or maybe Avon Storm? (at least than i get a new set of i pick up a puncture again....)

not happy!
BTW: i wrote a mail to the local council advising them that they should get the road sweepers out as both punctures happend with Wokingham borough roads!!!
