Mr_stabby is going off to look at another x1 what's the in's and outs again?
What should I look for and what should I walk away from.
Tried searching but couldn't find anything.
I'm the one that's going to have to test ride it (as mr_hobbly, as he's now known as, won't be on a bike for a while) and as I never rode his I need to know what to look out for.
It's just had it's 10,000 mile service how can I check if bearings etc have been changed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I don't want to buy him a crap one and then get the blame for

Thank you,
Shiney

If it aint a 2001 model, then forget it IMO.

Make sure it's a 2001 or 2002 model year ...all updates were standard on those ......beware of late registered 2000 models. Before 2001 had the ugly up and over gear linkages plus the six bobbin front disc which is a known weak spot. Check for leaking rocker cover gaskets (easy enough to fix ).
Ensure that it has the later type front exhaust hanger (looks a bit like an inverted y shape). Would nearly gaurantee they won't have had bearings changed at 10000 miles unless serviced by maz ......but don't panic to much as my X1 still has original steering head and swingarm bearings at 42000 miles with no ill effects and wheel bearings are simple enough to change.

Never ceases to amaze me Kev, that a bloke who maintains machinery for a living, could actually believe the head and swingarm bearings on an X1 are OK after 8 years and 42K miles.
As you've already found out, a gas mask and gutted race can wont get you home.....maintainance is everything.......your head and swingarm bearings are absolutely fucked.
You may not have noticed them deterioring but much like your wheel bearings, they will leave you stranded (or worse) sooner or later.
Head and arm bearings are the same taper races and only move through a set arc.
The head bearings are open to the elements and I guarantee the lower bearing is red rusty and as notchy as a very notchy thing......change them asap and you WILL notice the difference

They're always fucked at 10K.

I've got 9,528 miles on mine. Will I be alright for 472 miles and then grind to a halt?

Ignore Maz's advice if ya like...

I just changed mine at 15k and the difference, even to a numpty like me, is huge. They were exactly as Maz described, orange, rusty and notchy as hell.

BTW I havn't heard good things about west coast.
Oh and my M2 has PM wheels,I don't hate them, but they are a bastard to keep polished, but if they were powder coated they would be fine + the back is wider than a standard X1 so you can safely fit the cheaper 180 rear tyre
