To be honest, it would be handy to have a torque wrench anyway in case further tinkering was needed (especially if I win the lottery and can get a proper stable ).

I've got some old sockets tucked away and might have the relevant items, although I think a new allen key set is on the cards.


That's very reassuring to know. I'll try and start early to give myself enough time in case I get stuck. Might even get round to a 'How to...' if poss.

Ok, I spent the day working out what my toolbox needed to get the job done. I managed to find some interesting bits including an AF set of Allen keys which contains a 3/8" key for the pinch bolt, an adapter for a 1/4" drive torque wrench I have borrowed, and some deep sockets (3/8" drive) for the harder to reach nuts.

The one thing I cannot find is something to replace the 22mm (looks more like 7/8" to me) axle removal tool.
I remember seeing it in the tool kit I got with the bike (the emergency kit), but didn't think much of it as I couldn't work out what it was for - I doubt I would have thrown it out, but I can't find it for the life of me and it is the one thing I need to begin the process.

I managed to find a photo of it which reminded me exactly what it was, thanks to Badweb!

So, when I find it or something similar, I can have a go at changing over to "Al's fruity steel beauty"! (which is still forlornly in my garage ATM )

The largest Hex bit they have is 12mm, not got any AF bits. No Hex bolt, no large Allen keys (either system) - a bit rubbish for the specialist stuff IMO.

I found a great little place in New Malden called XL Spares (down the road from Krispy Kreme) which has lots of kit and is where I'll be buying things from now on. I'd prefer my money to go to an independant shop with friendly, knowledgaeble staff rather than a chain.
Met two other bikers while I was there and found out the name of the guy whose bike inspired me to get the XB (they were friends). Small world!

Yes, I eventually got it on.

It makes a big difference to the presence of the bike and there's something about an aftermarket can that affects the feedback from the throttle, perhaps it's just me, but it feels like there's more 'instantaneous pull' (dare I say torque).
Whatever it is, it's great, and I haven't even removed the baffle yet!
