I do know what you mean ash while my City x is on the warm up. Some days takes more miles than others. Sometimes where and when I bought the fuel seems to be a factor. Before the white wire mod the first attempt to overtake could result in a mild asthma attack! However, once thoroughly warmed up she never misses a beat. ;)

Interesting post Pash! A number of posts resembles my issue. Reading through what Ash describes about his bike is similar to mine. Only difference is mine doesn't wait until the next day, it waits until I park up and goes for coffee then retards itself ready for when I get back just to frustrate me!

Poor idle can happen at any time - hot or cold. However poor running I've always seems to occur when I restart the bike after a short stop especially when the fan kicks in to cool the engine when I stop. Sunday was a good example. Went from Plymouth to Bude without stopping 38miles. Stopped for a meal - restarted fine. Road for 11 more miles and stopped again only this time the fan kicked in. After a 30min stop the bike start in crap mode and took most of the journey back to regain max performance. Idle during this period is difficult and running is generally flat and gutless.

Is this your experience also...

I did tell you to log some data... Where did you get with that?

Mmmm no where yet! You asked me while my bike was in the garage for a few days with no spark plugs in it. Since fitted the plugs I went for that Sunday bike ride hoping I fixed all my ills! With the dark evenings and limited time it will take a while before I can arrange but leave it with me. :yup:

This is a common problem: the IAT sensor is heating up, resulting in a lean mixture. Move it to a cooler place and the problem is gone.

But why just ph's bike?

Maybe he needs one of these:

But if he logged some data, we could see what was happening

mine seems to cough n splutter a bit too just off idle and only sometimes does it too maybe its a plymufffffff hd thing lol, but not having ever had another buell i dont know weather thin is normal :(

i think its odd the air intake through the frame on the 08 on models is blocked off and has a tiny intake instead

pash i like the heat mat looks good resembles tht of the f.a.s.t. intake hillbilly motors made in usa that had a k7n cone filter on where can u get that sheild i might toy with the idea

It's not just ph's bike, it's a common complaint that bikes run rough after a stop. The IAT moved for 1125 models, not without reason probably.

Gunter, this makes alot of sense cause I've believed for along time my problem was heat related. What's an IAT sensor? Is it the lamber sensor that fits into the rear exhaust header to monitor emissions or something? this..?

or this...

Let's assume for a minute that this is the source of my problem, would putting my bike back to standard and giving it back to HD solve anything? Is there a fix for this problem? Could this be why the ECU flash upgrade now keeps the fan on whilst riding?

Lastly; I wonder if my headers are causing the IAT to heat up perhaps more than others which radiates more heat around the sensor? I don't know just guessing!

Hi PH,
I've that tray off my bike at the moment to do the breather mod.

Wouldnt doing the breather mod help you ? as it would stop warm air coming in right beside that sensor ?

Who sells that mat thingy for under the air filter tray ????? or whats it called ?

Eric.

Hi ericry

I've done the breather mod already. Am I right in thinking the IAT then is the air sensor pictured above in the airbox? If you click on that picture Pash posted it takes you to the site who sell them - USA.

I'm thinking IAT is Intake Air Temp. and thats what I think that sensor on the tray is.

Based on that I'm thinking I might get one of those under tray heat deflector mats.

Maybe I need a big stonking air intake scoop ???????? ......on my bike there's only a little wire grill just above the fuel filler cap...not much air can get in there ?????

Eric.

So do you have similar issue to mine?

I personally wouldn't mess with the air intake as this could mess up fuel/air mixture. If the IAT is as you say (which makes sense) then I see no way of solving this problem? Unless mine is faulty? Do they go faulty? or is it a design fault? I remember Pash mentioning this back along!

I don't know if this is a problem but I have touched the bulb of the sensor a few times. Looks quite solid really! Also, does it matter which direction the IAT is pointing? I've had it both directions - horizontal / vertical.
