I met an owner of a scooter workshop some time ago, who thought about closing the work shop, as he made most of his money by internet mail order. He got all his packets picked up by DHL or Hermes when they came for the daily delivery, so no need to queue at the PO. We do not have cheques in Germany any more for several years now, so money transfer or paypal only. One day a week all phones got routed to the answering machine, as this day was the "workshop" day, and another day the workshop was closed, as this was the "mail order" day.

Taking into account that most of his customers were "scooter kids" (usually tight on money), his approach seemingly worked very well.

Maz, all of the above. You've got to take a step back and chill sometimes. You only have to read the social section to see how many people suffer from stress related conditions. I seriously hope you managed to get some time out today and made it to Cosford.
Have a fuzzy hug from me, even if ya don't want one :4roz:

Now go have some family time and sod the bloody Buells for 24. xxx

Spot on Steve.....but imagine trying to run your entire dealership single handed

I have zero 'me time'....other than when I sleep and even then I wake up wondering whether I remembered to tighten whatever fastener whilst servicing someones bike because I just spent 40 mins on the phone explaining how to fit a part I mail ordered to someone the day before.
My workshop is mega busy this time of year but I still spend half the day packing mail orders, driving to the PO, standing in line, back to the shop to invoice, updating my books, answering phone queries, phoning though stock orders etc. etc. etc.....and all this for zero profit = loss.
Then I get back to spannering till god knows what time at night, then once home, I'm back on this place.....dozens of PM's for mail orders to go out the following day......and so it goes on 7 days a week.
If that wasn't enough.....then you get all the calls re. '' WTF my parts didn't turn up today''....and even though most parts are delivered with in 24 hours of an order, payment often takes 2 weeks or more to arrive, mostly with a 2nd class stamp, cheque made out incorrectly, a 3 quid cheque sent recorded so I have to stand in line at the PO again to collect etc. etc.
You may well criticize the way I run my business ie. no credit card facilities, no staff, whatever but my overheads versus my hourly rates dictate the service I can offer at a price to suit the average punter who cannot afford to pay for main dealers overheads.
You're right Steve, I need to get back to where I started ie. Buells and the folk that own them, without the distractions of trying to keep an ever increasing base of owners supplied with parts that they cannot get from the official dealer network, in order to maintain/fuck up their own machines :|

Yeah but apart from that what the f*** has Maz or the Romans ever done for us?

We need a bald eagle smiley head that might work. Anyway get off the forum and back to work ;)

Cheer up Maz, you take on one of the more frustrating/enjoyable/annoying/fun brands and deal with the odd/normal/dumb/brilliantly clever customer base (you choose the right words) and what do you expect.

You wanna start selling chrome stuff that'll sort you. Look at that Tubbs fella, surrounded by all sorts of chrome and anodised bling bits and he's grinning like a eejit sometimes, (though not always)

Buell experience guys at DG20 this weekend; Matt Llewellyn, Tim Bradshaw etc trying to entice guys onto full Buell range for free, some look at them like they're derranged and mutter about it's not a Hardly etc. That must be frustrating too trying to push the brand for DG20 in the rain when I'm sure they've better things to do.

Do you still stock that green tyre go stuff?..............

I've been trying to figure out for years If you were a saint or a martyr working 7 days a week. Life is to short, as several peopel here have said "step back, take a break, fuck off for the weekend"
How about reducing postage to twice a week and get someone in to do the donkey work? You can pay them £1 per parcel and stick that on the cost of the postage. Oh and people can pay via creditcard into your PayPal account If you have one. We do it all the time (just remember to stick the 4% on their bill)

do I still send a cheque for the engine mount or you not posting them either?

I did offer for Maz to send the southern batch in one box then we would sort them out locally.

Garry, If you're reading this are you picking FUBAR up in the next week or three? I don't mind waiting for my mount If it makes life easier.

Maz, I and probably others, presumed you were making decent money out of the parts business and I purposely put that kind of business your way as you help out with advice so much.

I am certain if you tell us beggers what sort of business you actually want then we will bare that in mind and help that happen. It is in our interest that you keep going.

Due to the recession my contracting business has seen 90% of the private sales dissappear but the commercial works is steady. And we are doing better for it. As someone else stated - 80% of profit does come from 20% of customers. i.e. the little jobs are not profitable.

Anyone who has run a small business, or is self employed for that matter knows how you feel, but unfortunately the position your in comes from your success. :worthy:
Personally I wouldn't rant, I would use my success to maybe grow the business.
Good luck ;)

"I'll be happy to fuck up my own machine", thats my prerogative as is where i choose to buy from and where i get my bike serviced.
If you dont like what you do , dont do it, if you dont want to sell mail order ,dont do it, If Buells are so crap why ride ,own and work on them ,why offer telephone advice if it is such as pain , if being on here is such a pain , drain on resources why do it , I assume you decided of your own free will to work, ride on Buells and offer a service from what i gather is very good. Well done to you.

I would have thought in the current economical climate all revenue streams are welcome as long as you can make a profit, if not cut the non viable ones loose but without the apparent contemp for your customers !....

I also run my own small business , i'm a chartered engineer we invested in our company, premises and additional people so that we could offer a better service that is profitable and grow the business. parts which were not we changed or closed but at all times we did not rant at our customers.

So Why rant about your situation and show a contemp for your customers is my question and no doubt i will get crtitised for asking the question repsonding to the hallowed mans post !!!

Rant over........... :D
