FD - I do change the bearings with a tyre change - have done for years - even before Buell came into my life - it's cheap insurance at the end of the day.

Only problem is that on every other bike I've ever owned I've always been able to drift the bearings out - for Buells I used to borrow a friends blind bearing puller but that is no longer an option - I guess buying a bearing puller will be cheaper than a new wheel.

What really surprises me is that I have about 6,000 miles on the bike now and am still on the original rear tyre - although it will need replacing very soon.

That sounds cool SM.

If you can DIY thats the way to go IMO. It is what I am going to do it. Its not "Rocket" stuff anyway is it

O.K. ...very interesting // You are not kidding?

But the front wheel is identical to other XB's? Then - let me guess - the specs of the bearing are different?

Nope it is the castings that are heavier on the ullys .....the bearings are the same as the rest of the XBs.......................the 2010 1125 wheels are light weight castings as per standard XB ones.

So, if Uly wheels are heavier then I would expect the bearings in them to have an even shorter lifespan - I'm glad that I didn't go down the XT route - which was my other option.

Ok, I've never had to change a wheel bearing on a bike in my life, and i usually run them upto 40,000 miles before changing them. How easy is it to change the bearings, and how much do they cost?

There is nothing stopping you from increasing the size of the hole in the wheel through which the spacer fits to enable you to expose more of the bearing inner race to make it easier to drift the bearings out. The material there is not doing any work and you only need 2mm or so...

£5 ea Front
£6 ea Rear

Look in the How To section to tell you have to change them...
