Been talking to my BG rep about a product they do called 'Ethanol Defender'... trying to establish whether it will protect our tanks in addition to their claims to protect all other fuel line components... I will report back in due course.

I copied and pasted Jeznewsomes original post to a few friends and received the following back:

Did a test using a gallon winscreen washer bottle a while back and it seams to work. But melted the washer bottle LOL.

Also saw an artical of a guy is states using a motorcross quick filler funnel with a smal tap at the neck. Basically hung up in his garage swooshed it around n drained of water n ethonol next day n jobs a goodern.

-------- Original message --------

Ethanol issues will get worse as our beloved government push for an increase up to 10% by volume over the coming years.

Some of the Tuesday nighters have been experimenting with a simple method of purging the ethanol out of unleaded, with (anecdotally) encouraging, albeit non scientifically tested results.

It goes something like this; take a carefully measured amount of clean fresh fuel, eg 1 ltr
Add a known quantity of clean water, eg 100ml
Shake vigorously and let it settle for a couple of days in a clear container.
The water will be clearly visible at the bottom of the container and by carefully drawing the fuel off the top, the "water" can be measured- hey presto, more than the 100ml you started with.

Theoretically at least the ethanol has been drawn into solution and is now dissolved in the water- so if the fuel had 5% ethanol, you'll have 150ml of water/ethanol solution at the end of the test.

Yes it's a faff, but may be worth bearing in mind.

So if the tank bubbling is ethanol related then there are not many options now (especially if you live in certain areas of the UK) and looking it'll be getting worse in the future.....though DaveH's tipple of choice (ESSO Super) still seems like the best bet.

These tanks were bubbling before there was Ethanol in our fuel in the USA (E5/E10/E15). The tanks are simply vapor permeable. But there is hope. There's a coating that can be applied inside but the name escapes me. Maybe someone else here has done it.

The coating you are referring to is Caswell epoxy tank sealer I believe. http://www.caswellplating.com/restorati ... ealer.html

Well Shell appear to be back after their Xmas break:

Both Shell FuelSave Regular Unleaded and Shell V-Power Unleaded contain up to 5% ethanol as stipulated by the European fuel specification EN228 and UK government legislation. At Shell, we are passionate about fuel, and our dedicated fuel scientists work continuously in the lab to bring you the most advanced and effective fuels.

Not as detailed an answer as others and very politically correct, but seems to rule out V Power for regular use in the S1.

Might need to give the Caswell stuff a try, though I know from talking to Ursus recently that it didn't cure the problem on his S1 tank.

Mine started bubbling again only two months after treating with Caswell product and re painting. Bubbling is only around filler cap area so suspect gasket under that wasn't fully sealed :-(
