Hi all.

I currently have a Kawasaki Versys which has been great for the last 2yrs.
It got reversed into last week and is currently waiting for the decision by the Ins Co. on if its dead or not.

I have been given a CBF1000GT too play on while i wait. Nice bike.

BUT, i fancy a change...

I took a '56 Uly for a 3hr test ride on Saturday.

Liked it, a lot. Especially the sound from the exhaust and the riding position.

Couple of things i didn't like and was wondering of there are any fixes to these issues.

1. Fan noise. I have read on here that its on most of the time, but its so damn noisy. Can you get a quieter fan, or do you just "get used to it"?

2. Neutral. Could not get it to go in. Either 2nd or 1st, thats it. At lights i just had to hold in the clutch, or switch it off.

I'd be looking for a newer one with the thunder engine and luggage. Do the later models work better?

Finally, what sort of MPG/tank range can i expect from 80mph Mway cruising.

I'm off over the ALPS in June, and don't fancy running out. (The Versys does 240miles to a tank!) I'm not expecting that.

Thanks in advance.

Steve.

Howdo 8-)

Yes, you get used to it lOl

You'll get used to finding neutral, too, it's just unfamiliarity.

Range - 125-130 miles until the warning light, then it's straight to the next fuel stop, no passing go.

Welcome :D

Welcome to the forum pal, after a few thou the fan doesn't come on as much or for long but it will still come on, You get used to it in no time.

Plenty on here tour mega distances with a Uly and wouldn't use anything else, a certain member here did the bottom of South America to North on his and couldn't fault it.

"Full Coverage?" he exclaimed, as he gave a final twist of the opener and pulled the lid back to reveal a writhing mass of worms. "Does he really need full coverage?" he muttered, slinking back under the bridge.

Then speak to some of the owners on here who actually ride their Ulys and really rate them  I own an S1W (which I adore and will never part with) and an 1125CR which has phenomenal performance but I would choose my Uly any day if I was going to ride to the Pyrenees and back with luggage. My Ulysses is my go anywhere bike whatever the weather and whatever I have to carry.

Mine is an 06 model but my boss has a 2010 XT having owned a couple of earlier models before and swears by it.

Steve, you seem to assume I'm gonna try and put the bloke off buying a Uly......why would I, they're a major source of income for me

I have several customers who've accumulated well over 50K on their Ulys but I think it's only fair to give impartial advice to anyone thinking of buying for the 1st time ie. these bikes have both strengths and weakness's and I'd rather a potential newcomer to Buells went to buy with a sound knowledge of the product, rather than end up disillusioned, out of pocket and bad mouthing the brand to all and sundry

I'd go along with that :maz: , you know I have great respect for your morals and principles :yup: You do need to get some joy from doing some long road trips on Ulys though. You would come back a changed man 8-)

It's interesting, as an FYI, ste v 1der, - I've never ONCE read a negative post by Maz about the ride quality of an XB. It's always just about the build quality and some of the design details.

By the way, if U R" ste v 1 der," how the fuck are you going to be able to see your bike, never mind get a license!
