Hi all, by bike is currently in the dealers getting exhaust problem sorted out - I'm not sure I trust the new replacement strap away to be fitted as last one didn't last long !  Is there anyone out there who has manage to source a 'marine heavy duty version t-bolt strap' which I can replace the dealer one with ? S |

OEM strap is just fine if fitted properly. |

If the strap keeps breaking it is either overtightened or there is a problem with the exhaust (like it has been belted from underneath). |

Cheers for the advice guys - but what would you do in my shoes ? - slacken off & re-torque the strap nut ? I've read on a forum that some of the recomended torque values in the manual were wrong..... do you just tighten it up until it gets tight' ? 300 miles since it last broke - somethings not right ! Dealer said he'd check the mounting point under engine for alignment - might be something damaged there causing it to twist. |

I would make sure everything fitted properly first. So that would mean, with the bike on a paddock stand, to fit the front strap with the mount loosely to the muffler (loose enough to move the mount should you need to but still a very close fit to the muffler). Then offer the muffler up to the headers. Then I would support the rear of the muffler with a jack and see if the holes lined up for the front mount and the engine. There should not be a gap between the mount and the muffler, it should fit snugly, i.e. no daylight. And the same for the rear. There should be no need to force the muffler into position, it should fit sweetly with no effort. If it doesn't, something is wrong, perhaps the headers bent, maybe the muffler damaged. And I would not tighten the clamp at the header/muffler interface until the straps were tight and the front mount was bolted to the engine. I have never (and please don't take this as guidance) used a torque wrench on my muffler straps, but done them up by feel, and never had a failure. No doubt they can break if overtightened, but I would say I have never overtightened mine. |
