Hey Barney, Done just shy of 12K and do have a free spirits tensioner. That said the tensioner has only been on the bike for about 3K so expect that had I fitted it sooner I would have had more milage out of my existing belt ........ and the two previous rear wheel bearing replacements ;0)

Tubs from Moorespeed racing did warn me about the belt when he fitted the tensioner ... but at the time I thought "He's just trying to make more money out of me" (sorry Tubs ;0)). I now wish I had listened to him as at the time he had some new genuine belts going cheap. That said Southampton HD were able to do what I thought was a pretty decent deal for a genuine belt.

Forgot to add, a free spirits tensioner is a massive must have.

Tubbs is as honest as the day is long, if he says something needs doing ... then it needs doing! :)

Not to stir up a hornets nest but I also have a 2008 Uly with no free spirits tensioner fitted and my belt is still going strong.
The majority of my riding is two so not sure whether this should have a positive or negative effect on the belt. I would probably have fitted a tensioner but just haven't had the spare cash. Saying that I do keep a spare belt just in case.

If you look at the Gates literature, these belts tend to fail though fatigue which is accelerated by shock loading. A Free Sporits tensioner is kind to the gearbox output shaft bearing but will allow higher shock loadings from closed throttle, whilst decelerating, to snapping to wide open (i.e. wheelies).

johnnyguk78 ,

two up will reduce the tension on both the belt and bearings (rear wheel, idler pulley and output shaft). The less weight there is on the bike the tighter the belt becomes.

That said, logic also tells me that you are moving from extreme to extreme so one minute you are at very little tension and the next (driving on a road where you are bouncing around) you go to full tension in bursts cant be good for the belt or bearings.

Pash is probably the best person to ask whether or not that theory would be valid.
