I run a polished Buell and I rarely need to polish anything. Wipe down with a damp microfiber cloth followed by a clean dry one is all that's usually required.
Make a good enough job of the initial polishing and the maintenance is next to nothing.

Thanks guys, that was most illuminating.
On balance, I think polishing is the way to go.
What a useful forum this is!

Can't comment on powder coat, but my polished arm went on in ~ 2001 and has done ~ 15,000 miles, in this time it has been hand polished (with a rag and polish) 2 or 3 times in situ and its still looking good. It will be properly polished again one day, but that will be to remove a couple incompetent spanner marks left by me being enthusiastic.

What happens when powder coat chips? Maybe I'm just unlucky but for me corrosion normally sets in and I get big bubbles (no troubles).

I have had various bits and bobs powder coated over the years and as pash rightly says if it gets chipped and left for moisture to get in it will start to bubble and peel before too long,
In the past I've used a blob of paint just to seal the edges of any little chips..........works for me so far ;)
