Hi guys any advice on headrace bearing replacement ...is this a known issue with these things ? Mine according to the old mot data etc has already had one set of headrace bearings and I noticed on my last ride they have play in them again. The bike has only done 3000 miles from new ...I've done a 1000 on it since I bought it and converted it a few months ago and no wheelies so honestly I'm amazed and slightly alarmed by this (. Any aftermarket high quality bearings available or what are my options and why would this happen twice at such low miles ...all I can think is the fact it hasn't hardly been ridden in the 13 years it's been alive and it's corrosion? Is this a east enough job to do or do I need any special gear ?

Cheers wobb

My experience is that they don't get play in them, they just feel like gravel.

How are you ascertaining that there is play? A knocking sound (from your brake pads moving in the caliper)?

10k is about the life of headraces...

They are prone to needing replacing but not that often , maybe they just need readjusting if they weren't seated correctly when last done.

Had to change mine on uly..Dont bother with cheap tappered, it'll either be too stiff or too loose and movement in headstock. .oem only . £60 odd from riders.. ..Also you dont need to undo cluster, just tap off top yolk..Stick with the torque settings..Job done.. :)

Cool thanks for the advice guys ...I'll read the manual re adjustment etc...yea definitely not the pads altho they float a bit but it's a definite clonk and bang coming from the headrace yoke area haven't had chance to jack the front up and have a proper investigation as yet but definitely has the feel of headrace bearing play ...I can only think it's incorrect figment adjustment of the last bearings or something as like u say 3k is really low miles for wear

With a fine pick fish out one of the blue seals and put plenty of a good quality grease in them. Its a bit scarce from the factory. As they're not fully rotational bearings they have a habit in indexing. (wearing in only one place) refit the seal and fit to bike. They're somewhat undersized for the job they do. My mountain bike headset bearings are not much smaller
