The swinging arm on my '01 Cyclone is in a poor state, so I've whipped it out for refurbishment.
The question is:

Powder coat or polish?

Any thoughts?

powder coat for low maintenance, polish for endless maintenance. :yup:

Depends how much you use it I reckon. Magz' X1 has a polished swing arm, looks good and needs a clean every so often, it doesn't get any wet days if possible :sun:

Powder coat if it's going to be ridden in all weathers.

You're welcome :D

I had my ally one polished and it's pretty easy to keep it looking good, as mentioned before a good wash will bring it up and a rub with some turtle wax occasionaly and bobs your uncle, my M2 is currently wearing a stretched and strengthened early box one which has indeed been powder coated and IMHO looks the nuts.......cheers nick :yup:

I had my frame done by Triple S in Bingley years ago, no complaints yet :yup:

The arm was done by a local firm who I've used before for little bits and am happy with their work too

Powder coating if done properly is pretty tough,I've done 12 years metal finishing,so have a wee bit of knowledge about finishes, stainless is king but polished ally is good too,but takes more looking after. :old:

Trouble with powder coating a swingarm is that any damage allows water to get under the coating and lift it. You cannot/must not coat any of the machined surfaces, which means you're left with a knife edge where the coating ends and the machined surface starts, again this is asking for trouble.
A polished surface leaves you with the raw material, which can be dressed and repolished.
A professionally polished surface needs very little maintenance to stay looking good, just rinse off any salt and every now and again polish using Brasso.....DO NOT use Solvol etc. as they are far too abrasive and will dull the finish, making it far more susceptible to oxidation.

....and while the arm is out, drill a small drain hole between the shock mounts.
