But forcing threads that are not designed to work together is clearly a recipe for disaster.

Buells are a mismatch of Metric and Imperial (SAE). General rule of thumb is that everything is UNC apart from switchgear and levers (metric - I'm sure I've forgotten something) and header nuts and some engine internals (UNF). Oh yeah the oil pipes are NPT.

Started out as a GPO Delivery boy at 14, educated himself in night school and eventually became Chief Exec Engineer for British Telecom (Maritime), running all their radio stations - the main one being in Rugby. Just after the War, he was also involved in the Anglo-US 'Omega' project, and solved the problem the septics were having with 'flash over' inside massive Faraday cages. During this time, he also headed up the Post Office Telecomunications Union.

They don't make them like that anymore!

My family were union people (meat industry), saved my ass at least once directly and countless times indirectly. :yup:

My lovely girlfriend has come back with 2 nice black 1/4" UNC allen head bolts. Not had time to try and fit them yet, but will post some pics when I do.

I am still a little confused but thanks for the useful links. I have some reading (and understanding) to do.

Brakes (Nissin) and Suspenders (Showa) are Metric.

As I remember it on my M2, when I have taken the clocks off, the connections on the back are diferent, one is UNF, the other metric. Got to love a Buell :P
