Hi All,

I'm back again. I would like advice on how to make my clutch pull lighter.

I find that my wrist is struggling after 30 mins of riding and after a couple of hours I'm in quite a lot of pain and my ability to ride is diminished. I don't know whether the XB clutches are normally this heavy or mine has a problem.

I am going on a trip around Europe in April so need to make my clutch lighter for this!

I did purchase the FS soft clutch and intended to fit it. However, after removing the clutch inspection plate I am unable to budge the screw that holds everything in place. It seems like it's under a lot of tension?

Lube your cable first.

The 06> had a lighter pressure spring.

It won't budge. I try to turn it clockwise as per the instructions but the screwdriver just slips out.

Disconnect the cable at the top. You can do this by aligning the slots on the adjuster and pulling the pivot bolt out (undo the nut underneath - all metric fasteners), then put drops of transmission fluid down the cable; a squirty can and patience on the exposed cable will see it find its way down.

really glad you asked this question, I have exactly the same issue with my firebolt. I dread coming back into town after a ride out as my wrist is killing me on the clutch hand; its the only bike ive owned with this issue.

I am going to see Maz tomorrow for a introdution and a brew and its one of the things i was gonna discuss with him.

if im honest its that painful at times it puts me off riding. :cry:

Thats Automatic transmission fluid ( usualy red and very thin viscosity )
NOT manual transmission fluid ( very thick )
remember to lubricate the clutch lever pivot
and most of all lubricate the clutch cable barrel where it fits into the lever .

Also check that the concertina rubber bit half way down the cable, front of engine is ok and put plenty of silicon grease in it and a couple of small cable ties at the top , this is to stop water, salt , crap. working its way down the cable , if you ride in the rain, then the water from the front wheel is like a jet wash searching for a way in :shock:

I was just referring back to my car repair days , and TQF ,ATF was nice and light , searching type of oil , used to use it in air tools as a lubricant as well

Be careful if your cable is the later nylon/ teflon coated jobbie, a lot of lubes can make it swell :)

I don't know if this helps, but the first XB I rode was an '03 9S and that was terrible. The clutch pull hurt my wrist after 15 minutes and the gear shift was hurting my foot. I spent the remainder of the session trying to avoid gear changes and was thinking of buying a late M2 instead. :? (maybe I should have done :| )

Later a well used similar vintage 9S I tried had a better gearbox and the clutch wasn't so bad. Then a number of 06 demo models I tried before buying my 9SX were all easy as pie. I would also fit the later parts if you can. ;)

Never had a problem with my clutch my XB, always light, smooth and responsive.
