Hi,

My bike had these little lights when I bought it, std set of lights were in the top box. Main beam stopped working on the little lights so tried fitting the std set today...

Tested both bulbs, OK... Had a bad earth somewhere so shorted the black return wire on the loom side.

Low beam OK, but as soon as I switch to high beam, it goes off after 2 seconds while hi beam indicator on dash stays on, even after I switch to low beam. No low beam either by then... Switch off bike...

Wait 5 mn, same again, low beam works... high beam on for 2 secs then off, no low beam. So fuse hasn't blown...

Thinking bad connector, bad start relay or bad handlebar switch???

Will have another try tomorrow unless one of you put me can put me out of my misery!!!

Bike needs an MOT soon!!!!

Bye for now... Ride safe...

Patrick

have you tried using a different connection for your earth
to what you have it on now ?
you may be energising a relay, then not retaining it

Indeed Nutah,

I've cut the black return wire on the loom side of the connector and soldered a new earth wire to it.

From the wiring diagram, it's a rather simple circuit, battery + > fuse > relay > switch > lights > return - !!!

Looks like the PO had an earth problem previously as well, 3 new earths of various quality around there under the cowl!!!

:headbang: sounds a pain, i would run a temporary earth straight to the battery
see if that sorts it ,
then dig deeper to sort out the earths you have, missing or broken..

not sure on Ully's ,but some of the XB models can have loom issues at the headstock area
