Help! My beloved but sadly underused now 1125r has developed a glitch in the electrics (painful, I know).
I replaced the original battery in the summer, as it had died, fitting a lightweight lithium one instead. It was going in for major service the following day and when it was collected, it refused to start. I asked the mechanic to check the electrics while it was in, which he did, reporting back that all was ok, he had charged the battery and the bike was running and charging normally. It started ok when it was returned.
Unfortunately, when I went to start it the following day, the battery was dead again and weirdly, would not recharge, either on my smart charger at home or back at the manufacturer. The battery was replaced under warranty but I have been reluctant to fit the new one until I get to the bottom of this.
My first thought is that the stator is breaking down but there have also been instances when the anti theft system has not shut down properly after entering my PIN to arm it.
Has anyone else experienced this before? Any help would be appreciated.
The dreaded low fuel light issue is also an ongoing problem, with it not now coming on until I'm running on fumes! Related to my distressing discharge problem or incidental?

Is there any leakage current? There should be a small amount to keep the trip meter fed, but any immobilisers or alarms will suck current...

That's a good question - the mechanic just said there was no problem! I have always used the factory fitted immobiliser and not had a problem, except when it hasn't shut down correctly. Presumably there is leakage current somewhere or the battery wouldn't go flat!

What year is the bike ? If an early one is it possible that you have a set of clocks that have the parasitic drain? Cure for that was to always switch off the kill switch before the ignition.

It's a 2008 model

2008 models suffered a parasitic draw from the instrument cluster , switching off using the kill switch before the ignition switch prevents it happening , most bikes had a software update/ new cluster fitted to cure this but I bet some bikes slipped through the net.
Not an issue as long as you remember to turn off the kill switch first.

Was that a recall :?:

I'm not sure.

Thanks guys, you've been a great help. I guess Riders would know if it had been a recall.

Would using the kill switch prevent me from setting the immobiliser?

I'm not sure if it affects using the immobiliser or not Mike.

Have you tried not using the immobiliser function? Not sure if it may be anything to do with it.
The electrical probs I had with mine all revolved around the stator issue and burnt out voltage regulator. I have never noticed any difference cutting the engine on key or kill switch. I probably tend to use kill switch mainly.
Good luck :yup:

My 2008 had the parasitic drain, I got a set of used clocks as the original had a bleed in the corner.of the lcd
I have never used the immobiliser, I doubt it's needed
You could leave the keys in and bike running and no one would nick an 1125r

Is the parasitic drain a problem that can develop over time? I've not had this problem until recently and the bike has been kept in all sorts of places, inside and out, for long periods, with the immobiliser armed

Disconnect a battery lead and stick an ammeter across to see if there's a current draw.
