Current ride: 1991 RS1200 westwind
Ok folks..........unfortunately Muffin is not cured ...went out for a ride this evening and ran perfectly for 71 miles .......perfect throttle response etc good steady idle pulled over after 40 miles to turn on the laptop and start logging some data.......still perfect at 60 miles so decided to give it a good thrashing from Horncastle through to Reevsby ........Up to the rev limiter ....full throttle through the gears ....running perfect at twice the naughty speed ;) .............. everything seemed just fine and then shortly after ........................... :( engine cut dead again ............all other electrics looked perfect lights indicators as i was coasting all still functioning ...speedo still speedoing as i coasted ...all dash lights ok etc ...................coasted still in gear and engine just gave a couple of backfires as it turned over.
Sat at side of road for 5 mins then bike restarted and ran perfect all the way home for the next 23 miles.
Have checked log and it appears on the log that the engine revs dissapeared ...bearing in mind it was coasting down from speed still in gear then that tells me it lost the ignition signal to the ecu ? so the ecu thinks engine not rotating.
Could this just be as simple as a faulty kill switch ........or more likely to be the crank sensor ?

Still a fantastic 94 miles though ;)

I had a quick look at your log Kev and made this plot of the event...

This is my analysis, others feel free to chip in...

So, you were cruising along, just decelerating, then you blipped the throttle and I would think the bike hesitated, as it looks like the CPS signal was lost then it recovered, then it was lost and then it recovered, all over the space of a second and a half. You continued to decelerate, blipping the throttle a bit, changing down gear I would guess and the engine went sub idle and konked out. At this point, the CPS doesn't drop out all together, but it looks a little unstable as if it is intermittent.

The CLT (engine temp) goes up, but this is cos you have stopped and there is no air flowing over the rear head to cool it.

I went through the rest of the log, as I am sure you did, and couldn't see any other evidence of the CPS dropping out...

Now, your question was:

If it was the kill switch, you would not be able to log any data as the ECM would not be powered for coms, but as you can see, the temperatures are still being updated and transmitted.

My money is on the CPS, the loom or the ECM. I think you tried a spare ECM, and I think you tried a spare CPS too...

PS. Looking at the rest of the log, you really did punish Muffin... :twisted:

PPS. I had to chuckle with your starting, you open and shut the throttle like it was a carb with an accelerator pump... :mrgreen:

lOl the opening and closing the throttle was just watching ecmspy to make sure that the coms was working ;) ........I've always found Muffin responds well to a bit of punishment occasionally lOl

To be perfectly honest I've never been 100% convinced that the new CPS wasn't still the fault ........symptoms still nearly identical to the original but recovery time to restart a lot shorter..............think i'll get another to try ...if it turns out to not be the fault it'll do as a spare.
I have checked through the loom and couldn't find any problems with it but I have got a brand new loom if I need it...think i'll go for the CPS again first though.

Just another question Pash ....high AFV .......is that a problem or not in your experience?

A high AFV could be the symptom of another problem (intake seal leaks or blocked fuel system for example), but it could also be how the ECM normally operates with certain maps as I understand (and I don't have an X1) that the race mapped ECMs on X1s run with high AFVs. Yours is between 120 and 130% which is very high for an XB, but I have no experience of X1s...

Kev, for what it's worth, it sounds to me like a dry joint somewhere that gets affected by heat from the motor. Try the CPS wiring.
I had initally thought of the main circuit breaker, but then, of course, everything else would have gone off, too.

Just my two penn'orth.............

Yep ........my thoughts now are that it's either like you say a dry joint breaking down with heat ..........OR ....the new sensor was faulty ..........not unheard of for electronic components to be faulty from new and something that we have had at work on a number of occasions............ there's a lot to be said from using known good used components for fault finding before buying new lOl

Easiest job is to try another sensor that is kindly being lent to me ...if that fails to cure it (and thats where the problem lies as I have to allow over 2 hours for a continuous test ride each time to even know whether it MIGHT be cured or not)

But hey any excuse to ride an X1 for 2 hours as got to be good :D lOl lOl lOl lOl lOl

i did have a TPS switch that you could reset then 5 minutes later
would go out of adjustment :shock:

Yep but my understanding is I'd have lost ALL sensor logs if it had been ignition failure mate .........also when i first had the problem, with the fault present I had 12v to ecu and 5v supply from ecu.

Well another CPS fitted so going to see if I can get 100 miles in in one hit tonight ....will turn laptop on after about 50 miles to start logging some data again ............hopefully it'll prove one way or the other if it is a CPS failure causing the problem.
