 Post subject: Headlamp Cut-out Switch?
PostPosted: 07 May 2009 17:03
The lights come on when the ignition is turned on so.........

Is it possible to put in a dip beam cut out in the circuit? Or will this blow something?

Thinking about when battery is down and trying to start etc........

You could check which fuse stops the headlight and insert a switch into one of the wires to or from that fuse - on the other hand just make sure you have a good battery and save yourself the trouble of wiring changes ;) it'll be time and money better spent.

Power to the headlights is cut while cranking the engine anyway, if the time between turning the key and pushing the starter button while the light is on makes any difference, your battery is shagged

How it works: D1 drops input voltage by ~0.6-0.7 volts, so the zener will block while engine off. With engine running and voltage above ~12.8 volts a current will flow and make T1 to open and in sequence close the relay - viola and Gen. 1.3!

The start relay switches the lights off when pushing the start button.

You could fit a switch to shut off the lights if you really feel the need and no it won't break anything, however, as per my previous post, why, is your battery that poor or do you like to switch the ignition on before breakfast then start the bike once your bacon buttys have gone down :?

Thanks Charlie.....

I dont think the M2's Lights do go out when starting....

Battery is OK Tho last year I had a naff one.

There are times when Turning the Headlam off could be an advantage.....

Feel free to disagree.....

In Strong low sunlight....

Passing livestock, Horses etc...

When you need to divert all avalable power to yer heated waistcoat.....

:D ;) Cheers.....

I do not think you said it was an M2 before and looks like all thought it was an XB. All new bikes have running lights now IE - Front and rear lights on all the time. You can switch them off to start the bike, will need to fit an extra switch and will do no harm, but they have to be on while riding. Insurance and all that.

I fitted as simple in-line headlamp cut out switch some years ago.
I just broke into the feed wire to the main hi-lo lamp, using a twin position waterproof toggle switch mounted on the dash. The pilot and rear lights still remain on at all times when the ignition is on.

There is a way to do it properly, so that all the lights are off until you decide to turn them on, but I've never had the inclination to do it.
Squiz posted instructions some time ago, using the handlebar switchgear from a Ducati. These were lost in the Great Hacking Disaster #1.
I have also seen the same method utilised using an in-line toggle switch.
